Don't be put off by the style of bikes in the shop - they're really much keener on fixing your old bike than selling you a new one.

And instead of just getting my bike fixed - I got it fixed as a lesson - so I can do it myself next time.

Has anyone noticed the explosion of these Car2go Smart cars in our area? I've come across designated "car club" spaces before but not just a load of cars with parking permits to be in the area. On a wander round the block this evening i counted 7.

I think its a helpful service to those without a car who need a flexible transport option, but given the restrictions placed on residents for the number of permanent permits they are allowed, and how much they have to pay for the privilege i'm interested to see how they got them all. The council is meant to be encouraging us all to use public transport, yet they must have ok'd the additional vehicles. If you also follow the "green" argument that is presented by the council for the steep permit fees, then how is allowing an additional 7 polluting vehicles a green initiative?

Can anyone shed any light?

I get given a lot of free books at work. Sometimes they are proof copies, sometimes just newly into paperback, some that publishers just want us to read. I currently have things like the new Khalid Hosseini (Kite Runner author), the Tracy Thorn biog, new Jake Arnott in paperback, cookbooks, a couple of kid's books and tons of other stuff. I've half read some, some are unopened. Our house is teeming with them and I need to make some space for all the other work and general treasure.

So... I am thinking of having a bit of a giveaway. If I brought them all to somewhere like the Stapleton would people be interested in having a rummage? If you feel you'd like to leave a bit of cash for them I'd donate it to the Children's Reading Fund that Waterstones collects for. I'd just like them to be read by someone who wants them really. We aren't allowed to sell them, and some of them have quite strict embargoes so no quoting or reviewing them on Amazon or anywhere please.

Would anyone be interested?

He was a fireman then, based at Holloway then moved to the newly opened Hornsey Rd fire station. He told me about fire bomb battles between the Greeks and Turkish Cypriots at Finsbury Park, being roped into sorting out various fracas at the Rainbow, and on one memorable occasion, trying to rescue an escaped monkey that was swinging round the balconies on the Andover. He was in the first fire engine on the scene at the Regents Park bombing too - the reason he left the fire service.

So having to get some shopping in (miss A insisted) I decide to go to Tesco, to find that the chest freezer isle is empty and one of the happy little elves who work at Tesco is talking to a customer about the chest freezers being broken, they are normally stocked high but he was saying that the food has to be thrown away or destroyed as there are not allowed to sell it.

I hate to think that a few £1000 worth of food will be trashed and not given to a charity/organisation that could use it, yesterday the red cross in Spain started to hand out food to the Spanish population because they do not have enough to eat, yet our fucking awful piss poor Tescos throw it away like it does not matter, it will just be put down as damaged and this behemoth will roll on.

If you are something big in Tesco and happen to read this for the love of god please sort the Stroud Green Road shop out its a nasty place to be.

Virgin Broadband randomness

I know there are other Virgin threads but thought I'd start this new one, as this is a specific question.

Since moving home in summer and having a new Virgin account set up, we get random outages every so often.

What happens is quite specific. Internet suddenly loses connection - occasionally notice tv picture goes dodgy at the same time if it's on.

The wireless network shows up in the bottom right corner of the PC as full strength and connected.

Trying to connect by iphone, it also says it is connected

But both the PC and the iphone are not actually connected and you can't use the internet.

So it is definitely the network not the computer (my internet radio also can't connect, so I've got three devices all proving this)

Sometimes I can cure this, by turning off the wireless router at the plug and the back of the box, sometimes - like last night and this morning - that doesn't work.

Two questions (Virgin are not much help)

1) is this same problem happening to anyone else round here?
2) for those more technical than myself - any thoughts on what causes this and how to sort this?

Hello this is Beetroot Cat. Now before I give start my cats view, I would just like to say thanks to everyone who helped me find a home.

My first thought about Stroud Green is dog poo, why should I have to poo in a plastic tray when dogs can poo on the street and the owners just let it sit there like some sticky, smelly icing on a cake?

As a cat I have a few problems with dogs and the stuff that comes out of the more intelligent end of a dog should be cleaned up. They sometimes eat their own poo which is one way of cleaning it up I suppose (and roll in it, which no cat would do!)

Dogs as every cat knows are retarded but not as retarded as the owners who don't clean up after them.

So be warned, next time I see a dog owner not cleaning up the mess I shall claw your ankles like a fuzzy streak of vengeance.
