  @ Larrick - haven't seen gomorra but really really want to - just somewhat filmed out after 2 weeks of the London Film Festival, haven't even seen james bond yet! @ slats - but is it quite so bad in the UK? Because, for example, trainspotting was pretty bleak but the scale just didn't seem to be so large. Not contradicting, just unaware and happy (well perhaps ultimately unhappy) to be corrected! Anyway, on the basis of today's good news perhaps everything in the world will now get better!!

If London's murder rate was similar, there would be ten times the murders.

  I need to watch the Wire I think because whenever I hear anything about Baltimore the first thing that pops into my head is [Baltimora](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baltimora)'s Tarzan Boy.

  we're like 2/3 of the way through season 2, with 3 waiting in the wings, and it really is very good. i just want to know when they're going to bring john waters into it...

  I've been to Baltimore once. I had a friend in college who lived there. Come to think of it, she's Polish-American like the characters in season 2. But the area where she lived was quite nice. Very middle-class suburban. Not the sort of place where people stand on corners.
