Don't think I was alone in predicting this was inevitably going to happen when our cock of a mayor stripped it of its anti-racism message last year. Maybe being seen to be against racism doesn't play well in the Boris-voting suburbs (I seem to remember the BNP being supportive, mind).
i saw, but didn't read properly, a poster saying something catchy like "UP-RISE: bring back our festival!"
anyone know anything more about this? i'd sign a petition. can't find anything about it online and i doubt boz will change his mind but i do like petitions.
thank you and well done. i don't know why i kept just googling the words "up rise" and it wasn't very productive.
it was about 3am though.
i just signed it and i was number 419. oh dear. definitely the chumbawumba effect.
Whether this is cause for celebration will depend entirely on whether the calibre of acts they can attract stays as high. But then, personally I thought the way the rebranding was reported was disgraceful: 'celebrating diversity' is essentially the same message as 'unite against racism', just less confrontational, less chip-on-shoulder and less prone to being hijacked by the Stop The War Coalition and similar unsavoury elements for another bout of US-bashing and terrorist-praising.
No, as witness my being possibly the least annoyed person in the recycling thread. I just don't like Socialist Worker entryists who have speakers at their events proclaiming "I am here to glorify Hezbollah".
I think there may well have been 100,000 at the last one. Jimmy Cliff was playing I think, which must be the biggest name they've ever had. The place was chaos
Last time out they had a Cuban bar plastered in posters asking for innocent Cubans to be released from US (bash, bash) and other international jails. Not all, but some had tried to bomb places to highlight the plight of Cuba so not that innocent at all. The bar sold Mojitos and Buccanero beer which I love, so I signed the petition!
Misscara - that's pretty much my feelings about the 'message'. They did a lot more to build bridges and end division simply by putting on a great and really varied bill, and getting people enjoying music of styles (and perceived racial constituencies) they might previously have thought weren't for them, than they ever did by disrupting the flow of the music with rentagob ideologues.
The mere fact that it's 'stop the war' and yet only ever seems opposed to certain sides in certain wars...
As for 'anti-racism' - the less confrontational 'celebrating diversity' conveyed exactly the same message in a manner that was more likely to get beyond preaching to the converted. The people who complained were the sorts who like preaching to the converted because it makes them feel big.
Thank you. I feel somewhat backward for not being able to work them out for myself. I have trouble deciphering abbreviated text messages too. or should that be 2

Any other decent events planned for Finsbury Park? The tatty funfair that's on there a couple of times a year really is a bit grim.
the fun fair really doesnt come close to something like rise for a great use of the park does it?
Did you get out of bed on the wrong side this morning?
I'll be there with the 'Stop the Bore Coalition' you won't be able to miss me, I'll be the one punching trustafarians as hard as possible.
Ok, you tackle the political protestors and I'll take on the recycled lightbulb brigade!
I'll be at Rise this year with a 'Stop Shite Acronyms on SG.org' stall - free drinks to all non-acronym members, btw
FTMFW!!!

MFI
BUt the rest, well here goes.
SSAOSG.org = 'Stop Shite Acronyms on SG.org' (as per Agaton Sax's post)
FTMFW = For The Mother Fucking Win
JFJ = Jungle Face Jake (That's me you know)
MFI = Not sure really - but I'm guessing it equals 'My Furniture Imploded'
