The garden centre at Ally Pally __is__ much nicer but also correspondingly pricier as well.... If you drive (or don't mind carrying them on more than one bus to get back home) there is a discount place at the corner of the A1 where it turns at the end of the Archway Road (don't know the name of this road but it leads to the North Circular).
There's also a cheap-as-chips place for plants in pots on Cally Road. It's open for only six months of the year. It's about 100-200 metres past the tube station. The 91 bus is your friend.
Another vote for Ally Pally. And actually the place on Caledonian rd is pretty useful too - I think it should be open by now. For the Cally rd place, the 259 will get you there from Finsbury Park.
Also, Morrisons on Seven Sisters Road / Holloway have some bargains if you're looking for Mountain Ash Tree's, Clematis, Honeysuckle, Passion flower - all around £2 each. They had some other bits 'n bobs too.
If you want cheap you can't beat the Crews Hill Gardening Club. Its Dutch and charges £10 to join. The prices are about half that of Ali Pally and the selection is vast. I also love Clock House in Forty Hill but that is a car jobbie too.
Crews Hill is easy on the train as long as you aren't buying big heavy stuff. For those who haven't ventured out there, there's a whole road of various outlets.
Driving to Crews Hill, however, may be one of the stupidest things I've ever done. 10,000 cars trying to get down a road not much better than a dirt track is not a recipe for a fun sunday.
There's a fairly new one on Hornsey High St. thegardenshophornsey.co.uk. I haven't been in there, looks ok from the outside. I like the service in Sunshine Nursery, but the enormous amount of other tat they sell gets on my nerves.
I've been to the Crews Hill Gardening Club and Sunshine over the last fortnight. The Gardening Club is very cheap, but the staff were all really miserable and unhelpful (bar the guy on reception, who let me join for free because I was using a gift voucher - the manager was insisting that I needed to pay to join iin order to use the gift voucher, cheeky bugger).
The people at Sunshine however were really lovely. We spoke to 3 different people (each wiht thier own area of expertise) and they were so helpful. I really got the impression that they loved thier job.
Also, I had a bit part in the film 'Espresso Splasho' (sequel to 'Party Party') which was filmed there in about 1985 when it was Dursford open air pool! My 15 minutes of fame...
Sunday morning market at Columbia Road for all your plants and stuff - single decker bus from FP station to Shoreditch. Or Sunshine but need two buses for that.
I've not been to Columbia road - am I likely to be able to buy various types of rose plants, climbers, ramblers etc at a good price rather than cut roses?
I went. Loads of stuff there but rose plants seem to be off-season or otherwise not that popular. I still got 4x 2.5-3ft potted climbing roses for £30.
the garden shop in hornsey is lovely - lots of compost and pots etc and good vfm. I was in there the other day and a lady was discussing having something delivered

There's another garden centre just north of Wood Green that's worth a trip but I can't remember where it is.

My grandad used to take cuttings and grow wonderful roses, apparently it's fairly straightforward once you get going.
