But aren't there any knitters who are also readers? Is SG.org being divided and conquered by Harringayonline, the council or other nefarious forces? I think we should be told. (I'm going to the Silver Bullet myself, they've got the first gig of any interest to me since they set up)
Bah, how are we meant to get a panicked conspiracy theory going with that sort of sensible response?
Performance, who spent a while saddled with the unwieldy alternative (We Are) Performance. Manc synth-punks, whose frontman Joe Stretch also writes novels, of which the one I read came across like a less unbearably self-important Houllebecq. They've done a couple of great songs but I am going to check out the venue as much as the band.
I used to adore Crouch End but it's not as appealing as it once was. The Wetherspoons certainly doesn't help but I think that Starbucks, Clinton Cards and Waitrose have squashed the je ne sais quoi that it used to have.
I still love Dunn's, Monkeynuts, the woodyard and Powder but I rarely go up there these days.
I think that Clintons opened about three years ago. Costa used to be 7/11 and I can't remember what was in Starbucks before but I think it might have been a pharmacy.
Powder is the prettiest clothes shop in Crouch End, they have some gorgeous homewares too.
Clintons has been there much longer. Odd as there's never anyone in there. I used to live on Crouch End Hill nearly 10 years ago and it was there then. The Costa used to be B2 - 24hr convenience store.
I disagree about JDW. I much prefer the All Bar One, which was quiet, relaxing and open. JDW is too enclosed, terrible decor with their signature vomit-pattern carpet; full of people who like pickle themselves from the inside.
I can't say I've noticed the Essex Estate Agent types. I tended not to go at the weekend, but on the odd day off, it was a lovely sunny spot in the window to have lunch and drink while watching the world go by, then pop next door for a cake for the way home.
You're right about providing a balance of pubs, they can't all be over-priced gastro pubs I guess.

Just saw <a href="http://blog.craftzine.com/archive/2010/11/how-to_crochet_amigurumi_exorc.html">this</a> and wanted to set it as a challenge to one or all of the Knitting Drinkers.
PS - how are we going to knit, drink and eat all at the same time next week?
