Book Club: The Secret History by Donna Tartt, December 9th

The next book club meeting will be on December 9th, and this month's book choice is 'The Secret History' by Donna Tartt. Here are some reviews of the book. 'Brilliant...a study of young arrogance, a thriller, a comedy of campus manners and an oblique Greek primer' 'A highly readable murder mystery, a romantic dream of doomed youth and a disquisition on ancient and modern mores... Tartt shows an impressive ability to pace and pattern her novel' 'Tartt's erudition sprinkles the text like sequins' All are most welcome to join in whether you have been before or not. We'll be meeting at the Old Dairy, what time suits everyone? Should we meet a little earlier this time to give us a bit more time for festive eating/drinking afterwards?

thanks annie! i started it last night and am already gripped, it is completely different to what i thought it was. for some reason in my head it was a similar book to the lovely bones, or some kind of childhood trauma tosh. very excited now i know differently. i'm able to meet at any time from 6.30. i like the idea of incorporating festive eating so i agree we should start earlier.

the guardian ran one of john mullan's book clubs on the secret history in 2003. I'm looking forward to discussing and hearing what are sure to be differing views. I love it and I've often wondered if, as in ADGS's case, it's because my circumstance were similar when I first read it. See you soon

So, is everyone keen to incorporate a festive meal into our next meeting? Should we book a table at the Dairy, they have a set menu online, or should we investigate elsewhere?

Festive meal would be nice and I'm fine with the Dairy. At the last meeting someone was asking how much the xmas dinner runs there and according to the Old Dairy website it is £19.50 for 2 courses, £22.50 for 3.

I have booked a table in the restaurant at the Old Dairy for 10 people for our book club Xmas party on Thursday 9th December. We can't order the Xmas menu as that needed to be pre ordered so we can eat off the normal menu. The only slot available is 7pm so hope everyone can make it!

Sorry for being so quiet since last meeting. I'm really looking forward to the meal on Thursday and seeing everyone there.
I have some serious reading to do - I had a copy of the book and left it in Stoke at the weekend while visiting my parents and I'd only read 60 pages! Luckily I went into a charity shop today and they had it so I'm reading bits every chance I get!

I'm not going to be able to make it - very disappointed! I haven't had much time to read the book but am enjoying it so far and would have loved to discuss it. Have a great time tomorrow, and a lovely Christmas too!
