I am thinking of buying a hat for the spring. Possibly a trilby. Problem is I have a very large head. I think it is seven and seven eighths. Can anybody recommend a good mens hat shop?

First – good idea. You will never look back. I have yet to find a proper milliner that doesn’t charge vast amounts for hats – you can be talking hundreds. If you can afford that then all to the good. If not, my advice would be to brave the vintage shops along Brick Lane and its environs (not on a Sunday when the main market is on); you can acquire a quality hat for splendid value. If that fails then one can sometimes find something of fair quality in Camden, but you have to sift through the dross. I understand that it can be a difficult game for those with a mighty cranium. But you do want the hat to be snug in order that you do not loose it to a stray gust. And they will stretch slightly. I will be following my own advice at the weekend, as my trilby has entered its fifth year of service and is somewhat dog-eared.

I've always wanted a straw hat of sorts for the summer, as I burn easy you see. I too have the mighty cranium issue which results in nothing off the peg fitting.

Thank you for all your advice. My preference is to be a first time user of the hat. The Lock and Co website looks very impressive. If I was already an established hat wearer then I'm sure I'd buy from them. However, as a hat virgin I have to be cautious and don't want to pay £150+ for something that I might not be able to pull off.
