Jenny's Beauty Salon on Tollington Park - any good?

edited April 2011 in Reviews
Hi,
I was thinking of trying out Jenny's beauty salon on Tollington Park for a manicure. Has anyone on here been before? Is it any good? I also can't find a price list on the web and wondered how expensive it is?

I can't remember exactly how much a manicure was but I have been to Jenny's several times and been really happy with them. It's run by a mother and daughter who have lived in the area for years and they are lovely.

Thanks. I've booked a manicure today to try it out

Let us know how you get on.

I've had a few pedicures at Laura's and she used one of those rotating sanders like a dentists instrument to remove the cuticles, so I feel I'd like a regular, and more gentle, pushing around with creams and a cuticle stick then attacking with the scissors.

Agree with Misscara however that the manicures are good. He doesn't use the dentist's sander thing on your fingernails.

Really positive experience - i would recommend. I had a luxury 1 hour one and my nails look great, my hands are really soft and it was only £24. i would have happily paid £30 : )

quite a small selection of polish colours though...

Surely the only colours they need to have are scarlet and lipstick red, a nice bright pink (for summer) and various shades of pale rose? Does anyone paint their nails any other colours?

Orange, blue, violet can all work

Gosh, how very modern! I'm afraid I'm rather conventional on the matter of nail polish and cosmetics, sticking to a 1930's pallette wherever possible.

My friend has a nail company so my nail varnish horizons are broadening. Chocolate brown anyone?

I went to Jenny's a few weeks ago for a spray tan - my first ever one, and done slightly against my will due to bridesmaid duties. Anyway, it was good - Jenny was very nice and her husband (??) and baby were in the waiting area. She seemed quite timid and shy, but it was the antithesis of what I imagine big scary shiny salons are like. Very friendly and good to support a local independent business!

Hi, Can you post here the phone number for the salon please?

Booked an appointment at Jenny's as couldn't get one at my usual place and thought I would give it a go. However when I arrived with child in tow they wouldn't let me bring her into the treatment room. Given that the appointment was going to last at least 30-45 minutes I didn't want to abandon her in the waiting room. They said it was a health and safety rule, which rather surprised me as child had never been forced to wait in a waiting room at any other salon I have ever been to. It has never even been raised as an issue anywhere else and child is not a boisterous toddler and is very well behaved. So no treatment for me and no trade for them. All very peculiar.

All my local girlfriends go there and they look good, so it I'd say ir is good place. Why take a child there though? "All very perculiar".

@chang because I am a single parent and to leave her home alone is neglect.

@Siolae My sister is a single mother and also a beauty therapist. She said that the reason a responsible salon would not let a young child, however well behaved the parents assure her it is, is that treatment rooms are often used for more than one purpose. For example a massage room may well have a pot of boiling hot wax on the go for the next client. If she was worried about a child harming itself she wouldn't be focussed on the treatment, meaning that the client wouldn't get the care and attention that they are paying for and expect. She was horrified that any salon would let a child into a treatment room, and said that she absolutely wouldn't have let nephew (the world's best behaved boy) in! Do you not have a friend or babysitter who could look after your child for the 30 minutes so that you can have a nice, relaxing treatment?

I am beginning to feel that I am having to justify my parenting methods. Often the case for single parents. To reiterate, I have been taking child into salons since she was a baby and have never encountered this before. I wasn't passing comment on the salon's treatments which, by all account are excellent. But to respond to the debate which I have seemed to inadvertently opened, I take my kid with me pretty much everywhere | want to go, including out with friends, both out of neccessity but also because I really believe this is how kids learn to behave and socialise. I must be doing something right because people often comment on how well behaved, balanced and mature she is.
  • Have you been back to Jenny's? I looked in and Yesterday there were 2 kids jumping around in there while there mum was being scrubbed . So maybe they have changed their policy hot wax or no hot wax . It's probably better if they are flexible, but I know from my own business health and safety laws can be a bad joke. (just try putting a cat in a basket for half an hour while you boil up some instruments ). Chang
  • Chang so does this mean your a vet or a dentist?
  •
Hi ChangN4N6, I went to Jenny's to check if they have change their policy, they only allow children in waiting room as long as they behave but they will not allow them at all in the beauty treatment room.

I have got my legs wax as excuse and I have to say she is so professional.

  • My mum is down and she has just been there and says its very good and less expensive than she was expecting. they did not let her take the dog in, which I think is fair enough. I took him for a walk . chang

Hi ChangN4N6 I am always looking after myself and my money what treatment does she recommend?
  • She had a coffee rub. Ground beans take off dead skin and the cafiene makes you energetic. Rubbed in by a lady in a plastic apron. She was offered a coffee enema (therapeutic) but was worried she'd be 2 buzzy and did not like the sound of it. Chang
  • Is Jenny's closed down now? I called a few times yesterday to book an appointment and no one answered. Walked past it today and the door's shut...
• Jenny's Beauty spa is closing down. It is very sad, I met so many wonderful people, I would not live anywhere else, the sense of community and the forum makes a difference. thanks to all.
• That is really sad! I came to see you the other day and it was excellent and you were so lovely, thank you so much. I wish you lots of luck.
• That's a real shame Jenny. Good luck in the future.
  • Oh no! So sorry to hear that. I'm wishing you lots of good luck in the future too.
