A little unorthodox but as a smoker I tend to smoke whilst walking home from the bus stop at night on the upper east side. I always think if someone approached me I could... burn them.

Sorry about what happened, Dewet. Many years ago I had my shoulder bag snatched in Hornsey Road. (Unaware of the dangers of the streets, I had rashly offered to escort a nervous young lady to the end of her road!) We had a silent (yes, I also forgot to shout) tug of war and the strap snapped. The man picked bag up and I told him to take my purse, but please leave me my glasses. He threw them onto the boot of the car and I thanked him. (My husband was incredulous that I did that.) As he ran off he apologised, saying sorry but he was skint! Luckily, I had already put my keys in my pocket while on the bus and, as usual, had only the minimum necessary amount of money in my purse and no cards or mobile. I rarely go out late at night now. A neighbour in Connaught Road has been mugged three times. Do you ever see those ubiquitous pairs of policemen sauntering around the streets at night? I don't think so. The idea of groups of people getting together to walk home a great idea.

I was mugged by a guy with a knife on Mount View Road last year. He snatched my phone, but didn't get my wallet as I figured I was probably a faster runner than he was. It was on the quiet end where it crosses the Parkland Walk, I've never walked along there after dark since.

I often think the police dont have a very visible presence around the area. In fact, I can't remember the last time I saw them. oh apart from the 3 riot vans outside the N4 the other week! Often think Stroud Green Road would benefit from a local police base where the two (or three?) different safer neighbourhoods teams could all work (together) from. Surely one of the councils could be persuaded to provide one of their empty premises on Stroud Green Road for this?

The only visible presence I've seen of the police is then wandering around in pairs chatting during the middle of the day. I have NEVER seen them when I'm walking home in the evenings.

I have mentioned this in a previous thread about my ex flatmate had her bag stolen from the noble with all her keys plus driving licence which had her parents address in Finchley. The next morning somebody tried to get into her parents house but luckily someone was in. So I would advise keeping your keys separate and don't carry anything important or with your address on it.

Another suggestion would be to avoid carrying your bank cards in your wallet and/or bag - if possible, carry them in your back pocket or a jacket pocket instead. My bag was stolen a few years ago from a pub, and as I kept cash and cards in my pockets, it meant they were safe.

I'm wondering if we could organise the police or another group to hold some self-defence classes in the area for us - even if some of us have done self-defence in the past, it's absolutely worth topping up, especially these days when crime is on the increase. Does anyone know anyone to contact?

Brilliant note. It almost makes you feel like all putting money together to pay for a security force to walk around at night to put these assholes off, because you don't see ANY police whatsoever at night.

Thanks all for your kind words, everyone. It is strange how you still replay the events in your mind, even nearly two weeks later, looking for loopholes or other things to have done. Every time the outcome seems to not be on my side, though. It also definitely makes you more paranoid: now every hoodie is a threat, and I feel palpably nervous traveling that same route at night (which I have to do most days, unfortunately).

I was robbed last month (in central, not N4). Don't fret about it. You've been a victim but it was not your fault, and worrying about what you could have, should have done won't change it. They've pinched your phone and your wallet, but don't let them take your peace of mind too - beat them at that, at least.

Another mugging on MVR last night east of the junction with FPR, at around 6:30pm. That stretch seems to be a bit of a target at the minute, so keep your wits about you, and your valuables out of sight.

Seems like no reported muggings took place in Mountview Rd in September. Regina Rd looks like it is a little crime hotspot with lots of Anti Social behaviour during Aug and September <http://www.police.uk/crime/?q=London N4, UK#crimetypes/2011-09>
