Attempted Mugging

Corner of Granville & Stapleton. Two teenage shits just tried to encourage my housemate to surrender his phone. He declined and out-ran them, but have your wits about you in case they get more confident.

I'm off out in my leather gear and cape.
• It's the area. Too posh. In kreukav's day the muggers used to give you money...
 •
Neighbours on night patrol aim to reclaim streets from muggers

Evening Standard 19 Dec 2011

Residents have launched their own crime-fighting night patrols after a string of violent muggings and a carjacking in their south London neighbourhood.

Up to a dozen neighbours in Bonnington Square, Vauxhall, have patrolled the area with lanterns and created a telephone helpline which lone women can call to be escorted safely home.

Organised by resident Marie Johnson, they decided to "reclaim the streets" after reading in the Standard about patrols to beat the so-called Pimlico prowlers, street robbers who prey on women.

Latest police figures show a rise in muggings in all but two London boroughs, while burglary rates are also rising across most of the capital.
Bonnington Square has a higher crime rate than the London average.

Police and a local councillor joined the neighbours' patrol last week and helped them to install a new security light. Charlie Boxer, proprietor of the local Italo delicatessen, said: "There's a real display of willingness to stand up to the muggers through people power.

"Quite a few young women have been punched in the face and had their bags snatched. We've got a very active community who were very troubled and wanted to do something."

Resident Draeyke van der Horn, 42, a chef, said: "The incidents happened in areas that were quite well-lit. One lady was attacked as she walked into the square. Two men were trying the handles of cars and then they robbed her of her bag. Then last week a couple were held up in the same place. They think the mugger had a gun.

"It seemed like we had a whole spate of thing that happened in a short period of time. Pizza delivery men were also attacked and the food was stolen.

"On Thursday night, everybody came out with candles and hot drinks. We're not going out there to catch people, it's about reclaiming the streets and hoping it will put people off coming here to commit crime."

Scotland Yard admits it is struggling to combat the rise in street robberies. Commissioner Bernard Hogan-Howe told the London Assembly last week: "We've got a challenge at the moment around robbery, particularly street robbery."

Latest figures show the total number of muggings has risen by more than 16 per cent on last year, while burglaries have increased 7.5 per cent. The statistics also show a rise in pickpocketing.

@Willm. I think it's a London-wide thing. The posh thing might play a part as in 'relative poverty' as there's a growing rift between rich and poor. However, I'd say it's to do with more and more people carrying expensive phones like iphones etc. I've known quite a few people who have had them ripped off them while speaking. And I guess they take a chance sometimes and hope the person they mug has one in their bag or pocket.

As someone who has been attacked on many occassions and mugged twice (when I was a 19 year old, once in London and once in Amsterdam) I'm with Arky on this in calling the muggers scum. I've learnt if anyone approaches me at night to run and I've had to do it a few times.

@Arkady, sorry to hear about your friend.

@Gem, Fortunately the plural of anecdote isn't data and you're probably safer than you think. The British Crime Survey, which has been discussed here before, shows that crime fell by 45% from 1995 to 2011. That doesn't get reported much, because it's a dull story that only policy wonks care about, but it is really properly good news.

(it goes without saying that there's a long way to go and that general stats aren't much consolation if you're a victim of crime)

 • Mirandola is always the calm voice of reason on these boards.

People should check out her excellent blog, too: http://thehornseyroad.blogspot.com/
;
 • Good blog! Sorry to hear about your pal's spot of bother Arky. Of course what we need is Prince Harry driving around to locate the thieving bandits.

 •
don't walk down the street talking on your mobile;because they can snatch your phone from you from behind as they cycle past.make a phone call inside train station where its safer.

"you're probably safer than you think"

depends what you think and how much you know about the facts

the islington tribune reported recently that 10% of stolen mobile phones go through the hands of the underworld in finsbury park,/blackstock rd.you wouldn't be safer than you think on blackstock rd,its a den of thieves down there.and police needed hundreds of police officers when they raided shops their in recent years.

if you read crime reports produced by the met police about the number of robberies and violence involved in robberies it gives a clear picture of robberies in london (robbery is theft with threats of violence).i wont give further details but i was horrified about the amount of robberies in broad daylight involving violence.its about time that central gov put more money into the met's robbery squad to arrest the robbers...

i wonder if n4-n8 locals would set up a neighbourhood watch like in bonnington sq in s london

 •
it sounds like the police are fighting back against the hoody scum:

as a review of the summer riots say police could use live bullets in riots in future and plastic bullets against scummers.for example if hoody scum are attempting arson.

the summer rioters must be so stupid drawing attention to themselves by rioting;as they are just giving police a reason to take revenge on them at a later date and to do more stop and searches on hoodies.surely if you are a decent quality criminal you dont draw attention to yourself;and you want to keep your head down so you can commit crime in peace without getting your collar felt by old bill.

 •
thankyou very much to response car police and robbery squad police in haringey borough and islington borough.police are brave chasing robbers with knives.it must be frustrating for cops knowing who the scum bag robbers are but not always being able to get the cps to charge them due to lack of evidence.so thank you safer neighbourhoods police too in the n4 - n8 area.

a legal issue which i think is important is that in recent history it was the police who charged criminals and now the charging is done by cps (crown prosecution service) .this means the system is more fair but the streets are more dangerous.so cops arrest someone then hand the case to cps for them to bring charges.

the system should be changed back to what it used to be when the cops (feds) could charge a criminal and not have some liberal politically correct cps lawyer saying we arent going to charge the hoody because there isnt enough evidence.

yes in the past cops planted evidence to get a conviction.but that is good if it gets a drug dealer off the street

not fair - but if it keeps your daughter safe from being mugged then who cares if the criminal gets evidence planted on them and they end up in jail if cops know he is a criminal

life on mars tv show when cops planted drugs on a known drug dealer - that was unfair but unfair is good because the criminals are unfair

 •
feds n army used plastic bullets in n ireland so why not in rest of uk when hoodies go on rampage...

Baton round use in Northern Ireland

Various forms of baton round - first rubber, then plastic bullets - have been fired to control and counter civil unrest in Northern Ireland.

Soldiers used them from 1970 but the Royal Ulster Constabulary (RUC) did not fire any until 1981 - the year of the Hunger Strikes.

According to police statistics and the RUC George Cross Foundation, 16 deaths have allegedly been caused by baton rounds. Eight were children.

Of those 16 deaths, six have been attributed to the police and 10 to the Army.

The RUC and Army fired 125,492 baton rounds between 1970 and 2001, when the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) was created.

The attenuated energy projectile (AEP) replaced the previous plastic bullet, which was seen as more dangerous, in 2005. No deaths have since been attributed to the weapon. However, their use remains politically contentious.

Last summer the PSNI discharged 338 AEP rounds in dealing with rioting in Northern Ireland, according to the Policing Board.

The weapon was used to control civil unrest in Belfast, Portadown, Ballyclare and Carrickfergus.

 • That place has become a dump. Try the N4 for a lively time but no crime.
