Stroud Green Beautification

  • The Council is now much more careful what type of tree it plants.  In the past, trees got planted that grew far too big with enormous roots that destroyed pavements and damaged homes.  I can ask what is on their approved list of trees.
  • The problem with trees getting too big is in part because the Council's approach to pruning/pollarding has tended to be somewhat haphazard! Are local residents allowed to prune street trees near their homes?
  • There's heaps about the tree policy on Haringey's website, inuding a list of species that they can plant. Unless one can eat ornamental pears, crab apples are the only edibles.

I love love love apple trees but the fruit falls to the ground and is a pain to clear up. Ornamental cherries make me feel all Japanese or Houseman-y 'Loveliest of trees the cherry now/is hung with snow along the bough'.
  • I can pretty much guarantee that the fruit of any trees planted on Woodstock Road won't go to waste!

This comment relates to an old posting , but looking through the thread I just noticed a map.  It shows the 'proposed boundary'  for Stroud Green going along Hornsey Road, then jutting in to Bracey Street.  Is someone honestly thinking the last 5 houses on Corbyn or Thorpedale are not in the area?  This is as silly as the council trying to put different parking restrictions on the same street.
  • I'm afraid you have misread the map.  The line runs between Bracey St and the Hornsey Road, then 'juts' out to incorporate the very houses that you mention.  Hey, it's a thick line on a low-resolution map.<br>
  • Stroud Green is a state of mind
  • Sorry - just didn't want to feel left out as SGR is where we walk to do our local shopping.  Saying that I wish there was more along Hornsey Rd as alot of shopfronts are being turned into flats.  The few shops/restaurants who provide good service could use others to pull people over there way.
  • <div><font face="Arial, Verdana" size="2">Hi.  Had a response from Council bout planting trees on Woodstock Road, which I've pasted below.  In summary: the Council have already done a survey and know there is space for 10 street trees on Woodstock Road, but its not our area's 'turn' to get more trees until 2018. However, residents can fundraise for their own trees. It is £210 a tree, but the Council might pay half</font></div><div style="font-family: Arial, Verdana; font-size: 10pt; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; line-height: normal;"><br></div><div style="font-family: Arial, Verdana; font-size: 10pt; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; line-height: normal;">Any ideas for tree fundraising?</div><div style="font-family: Arial, Verdana; font-size: 10pt; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; line-height: normal;"><br></div><div style="font-family: Arial, Verdana; font-size: 10pt; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; line-height: normal;">Kind regards,</div><div style="font-family: Arial, Verdana; font-size: 10pt; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; line-height: normal;"><br></div><div style="font-family: Arial, Verdana; font-size: 10pt; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; line-height: normal;">Richard</div><div style="font-family: Arial, Verdana; font-size: 10pt; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; line-height: normal;"><br></div><div style="font-family: Arial, Verdana; font-size: 10pt; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; line-height: normal;"><p style="color: rgb(34, 34, 34); font-family: arial, sans-serif; background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255);"><span style="font-size: 11pt; font-family: 'HelveticaNeueLT Std', sans-serif;">Dear <a name="13d3a7fd389a6db0_R47dfb8df79024ae49e635a326caa4a69" style="color: rgb(17, 85, 204);">Councillor</a> <a name="13d3a7fd389a6db0_R54757af9387c46c4b30bb910d8213390" style="color: rgb(17, 85, 204);">Wilson</a><u></u><u></u></span></p><p style="color: rgb(34, 34, 34); font-family: arial, sans-serif; background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255);"><span style="font-family: 'HelveticaNeueLT Std', sans-serif; font-size: 11pt;">There is an agreed budget of £60k for tree planting for the next financial year. • You could try asking local businesses?  Davies & Davies Estate Agents (the ones on SGR opposite Nandos) sponsor a lot of the Stroud Green Primary School activities.  SGPS are located on Woodstock Road, so would make sense. Maybe ask other businesses in the area too? <br>
  • <font face="Arial, Verdana" size="2">£210 a tree?!!! Where are they getting them from? the amazon? Sounds like a case for woodstock road guerrilla gardeners.</font>

  • The Co-op have a fund for plants and trees for neighbourhood gardening projects. I read about a lady who started something in Rochester, Kent that benefited from it. I will try to find the info.
