Left Unity - Crouch End & Haringey Groups

For those in the area with a leaning towards the left there has recently been an<span style="color: rgb(68, 68, 68); font-family: 'Times New Roman'; font-size: 14px; line-height: 18px; background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255);"> appeal to discuss the formation of a new political party of the Left to bring together those who wish to defend the welfare state and present an economic alternative to austerity:</span> <div><br><div> <a href="http://leftunity.org/" style="font-size: 10pt;">http://leftunity.org/</a><div><br></div></div><div>At this stage the party is still being formed with a broadly speaking left of labour position.     I have just been reading about the rise of Fascism in Italy.   It came about in not dissimilar circumstances to today and the sad thing is that everybody - the left included - just let it happen.<br>

    Oh ffs. This way Italy lies and it's all the dafter with a FPTP electoral system. If you really want to change things then join labour, tories or libs and work from the inside. Otherwise you're just being self-indulgent naderite idiots. And yes, I am still mad about the latest italian elections.

    So when the Labour party was formed by people who could have been working to reform the Liberals from the inside, they were self-indulgent (pre-)Naderite idiots?<div><br></div><div>I'm not saying this particular idea is a great one, but the idea that any new party is necessarily a waste of time does rather founder when one of our big two parties was itself the new interloper not so long ago.</div>

    Whilst there is a conceptual similarity, there's not a lot in common with the formation of the Labour Party and constant deckchair-shuffling of people constantly splintering in and out of Respect, the SWP and others.

    Deckchair-shuffling! I love it. Andy's right - the left is notorious for its splitting. they form umpteen groupuscules, as the French (who have a word for it) say. Here's a tip for newbies to leftism: the longer the group's name, the fewer members it has. So the International Marxist Party of Great Britain/Stroud Green etc etc would have... 10? 11? 12 max.

No doubt a more extreme version of the socialist delusion. Left unity rests upon a sense of victimhood. It deludes its victims into the belief that they have less because others have more, and that if "the hardworking" were to be relieved of their hard earned for the consumption of the poor, the curse of poverty and inequity would be overcome. However, the redistribution and consumption of capital wealth is not a mechanism for the creation of wealth; as the adage goes, making the hardworking poor does not make the poor rich.</span>

    Outisde certain extremes, the more materially equal a society is, the more economically productive it is.  Let alone happier, more stable, more crime-free.  This has long been known to be true, and can be plotted on a graph.<br>

    One word, Australia.<div>Much less of a gap between the richest and poorest. A generally much happier population and surprisingly enough much less affected by the recession than it's first world counterparts.</div>

    Work from within Labour against Austerity? <div>Have we been listening to the same party lately? Labour has publicly come out in favour of Austerity claiming that they will not reverse any of the cuts.<div><br></div><div>The Left is notoriously fractured and the SWP is in a shambles right now. But Labour is also completely disregarding its traditional support. The absurdity is even a slightly left position, like keeping the NHS, these days looks to most politicians like pure Socialism. </div><div><br></div></div><div><br></div>

    @echoclerk, I'm not saying that the current Labour party is perfect (or that any of the others are) just that you've more chance of actually changing things through them. Also, I'm always suspicious of people who go for the exciting fresh start option rather than the mind-boggling tedium of leafletting, going to meetings, knocking on doors, etc...
