@Stella, no argument from me there. The ultimate irony? I called the fridge repair guy this morning. His van's broken down! But apparently it's not uncommon for fridge freezers to give up the ghost when it gets really hot (at least in the UK - the other hot bits of the world seem to be able to produce refrigerated appliances which still work).
You're not alone, I know other people whose fridge freezer just gave up the ghost. I had mine in the old flat (new one!) give up three times in two years. Very odd. What's also very annoying is when there's a power outage.
Suddenly, you have to eat a lot for days to save the food from being thrown away.
Yes, I had an unexpected late supper last night to save some chicken laksa from being binned! Apparently my fridge will recover, it just needs a holiday... so huge thanks to @krappyrubsnif for lending me his spare for a little while!
That's what happens a lot of times. My FF would turn itself off. Its way of saying: oi! You need to defrost me from time to time. Yeah, I know that, but why do other people's FF keep working for years not being defrosted, eh?
@wisteria53, sorry to hear that. But interested that your fridge bit is still working - the engineer I spoke to said that it's the freezer which cools the fridge. Ours has just about recovered - we think, it's being a little temperamental! - after 4 days switched off with doors open so all the internal ice (inside the back panel, so one can't see it) defrosted; we also took off the vent cover at the bottom and found a colossal clump of fluff/dust, which we removed. Hope you didn't lose too much food.
