<p class="MsoNormal">In homage to my hometown, this month we will be reading The
Card by Arnold Bennett – a short comic novel written in 1911.</p>
<p class="MsoNormal">Set in The Potteries (Stoke-on-Trent), the story follows <span style="font-size:10.5pt;font-family:"Arial","sans-serif";color:#252525;
background:white">"Denry" Machin from washerwoman's son to Mayor of
Bursley</span>.</p>
<p class="MsoNormal">Bennett’s works range from the comic to the unremittingly
bleak. The BBC recently asked if he was the Edwardian David Bowie (<a href="

You may come to the conclusion he was a spider from Stoke. </p>
