Affordable hairdresser

Hi, guys.

Anyone know of a good and affordable hairdresser? I need full head high lights (very long hair) and a trim. Call me stingy, but I'm just not willing/can't afford to pay 100 or more.

I'm normally sitting model for trainees and would like to continue with this, because both sides are benefitting from this. The hairdresser I've been with for some time is constantly cancelling on me, or the communication leaves a lot to be desired for and I'm fed up with this.

If you know a salon who has trainees and need models, or one with reasonable prices, please let me know. Thank you.

  • There's a hairdresser on Middle Lane in Crouch End with an ad for models in the window...can't remember the name of it, but I'm pretty sure it's the only hairdresser on that road.

Pulp salon in Crouch End used to do 50% off cut and highlights during weekdays so it's worth checking if the deal is still on. I've been going there for a few years and have only had a dodgy cut once and they seem to specialise in highlights.
  • Cheers guys. I'll check them out.
  • Pulp quoted me 95 after the 50% deduction, so that's not an option. It IS a lot of money just to look pretty.
  • Wow I agree - that is way too much. They must have put their overall prices up then in the last few months!
  • I may have found somewhere else, but need to check them out first. As I said, I'd like to continue being a hair model as it helps me keeping the costs down, and future hairstylists to learn, so both sides are benefitting. The only downside is that it's not as flexible and you spend up to 5 hours sitting on your arse.
  • If you're willing to travel a bit further (well, Dalston/Stoke Newington), I can recommend Barberette: http://barberette.co.uk. Enric does the colouring there for about £55 for long hair.
  • They do hairdressing courses at the College of Harringay, Enfield and North-East London, so you may well be able to get cheap haircuts by the students if you can go during the day. http://www.conel.ac.uk/
  • There's Toni & Guy school at Tottenham Court Rd too. Toni & Guy do seem to work on the North Korean model though - they do six different haircuts and everyone gets one of those.
  • Thanks, guys. All good suggestions. I've made appointments with Oasis on Holloway road; they're a college and have another salon on Blackstock road. A little different than your average salon environment, and I need to go twice (first high lights then cut) as the students are still learning and not as fast as yet, but the prices are more like what I'm used to when being model.
  •
I can highly recommend Karizma on Stoke Newington High Street for being value-for-money and high quality. The highlights I got there were perfect and cost something around £80.

I am also looking for a new place, however, as I'd like to find something closer to Crouch End. Also, (and this is just a matter of personal taste and I feel bad saying it) but the hairdresser at Karizma was SO talkative that it drove me a bit crazy given that I was sitting there for so many hours. But she was meticulous and great at her job, and a very nice person, however I just can't really take the stress of going back.

Please do let us know how it went with Oasis, how you like your hair. I tried Pulp once. I thought the cut was great, but the highlights were terrible. I ended up paying to get them redone at Charles Worthington in town (which always does a great job but is very expensive).

I will end up trying other places around here but it is very high risk given that I don't want to have another Pulp experience where I end up paying for them twice.

Anyone with "blonde" hair want to offer some advice?

  • I was with Shine on the Green in the past year or so. If you're flexible and don't mind having to chase them up or appointments being postponed, then they're good for models. If I remember correctly it's a full head highlights for 35 and the cut for free, but you need to bring time and often have to come twice.

I was a model for a salon on Holloway Rd., I think it's Headlight or something like that. The owner is a painter, too, and they're quite nice. Don't know if they do that, but it's about 60 pounds for highlights and cut.
