Godfrey's Pop-up butcher

So on my walk down Wells Terrace I spotted a sign for Godfrey's (sign wasn't out - was hidden behind security gate) which said:<div><br></div><div>New Pop ip Shop is opening for Two weeks from Tuesday the 1st Till Saturday the 12th of September Mon - Sat / 8am - 6pm</div><div><br></div><div>Interesting!</div>

  • More details here: http://www.godfreys.co/one-week-to-go-353-c.asp<div><br></div><div>Go and tell them a local shop would be great ;-)</div>
  • Always wondered why they never had a shop counter at their prep warehouse.
  • They have thought about doing it (we asked!) but the set up costs are extraordinarily high. Maybe if the pop-up works well they'll be able to see more of a business case for it. We order online and collect from there all the time - really handy

This is truly exciting, and I really hope it's the sign of things to come.<div>It hadn't quite sunk in that they do click & collect either.<br><div><br></div><div><img src="http://i974.photobucket.com/albums/ae221/Redarkady/IMAG0034.jpg"><br></div></div>
  • They do decent meat, but I thought them very overpriced when I used to go to their Highbury shop. And it's not good enough to justify that amount of time queuing!
  • That's an interesting development and would be good news if open more.<div>Having said that, Tony's is a cracking butchers and cheaper than Godfrey's (and Tesco).</div>
  • It's really good meat, beautifully packaged.  We had a half lamb shoulder that easily went around 4 people, plus some fillet ends (bargain) and sweetbreads.  Website was easy to navigate.  Looking forward to using them again and wouldn't hesitate to recommend.
  • <font face="Arial, Verdana"><span style="font-size: 10pt; line-height: normal;">I recently went to a BBQ, and Godfrey's provided me with a massive juicy beef short rib rack that was absolutely divine.  They are great with cooking instructions too.</span></font><div><font face="Arial, Verdana"><span style="font-size: 10pt; line-height: normal;">But yeah, Tony's is excellent and shouldn't be </span><span style="font-size: 13.3333330154419px; line-height: normal;">neglected</span><span style="font-size: 10pt; line-height: normal;">. I like that the Hopsmiths now gets all its meats from him.</span></font><br></div>
  • In response to my imploring him to open a permanent butchers on the site, Christopher Godfrey says:<div><br></div><div>"Hi everyone in N4 the Pop up shop is to see if a shop can work on the site. Fingers crossed let's see"<br></div>

Popped in today on my way home from the tube. They have set up two chiller counters and two large shelf units with stuff from the Highbury shop. Good selection of meats available. It's going to be a killer having this on the door step! Lamb rosettes with salad for dinner tonight. Other than the sandwich board on the pavement there isn't a sign for the pop up shop itself within the yard and as I was going to try a side door, this large automatic door slides open and reveals the butchers shop :)
  • I tried to find it and got stumped.
  • I almost left thinking it closed early as I couldn't find it. Did you go through the gate? It's opposite Park Theatre. Go through the gate and turn right towards the large yellow/cream door. It slides open. They should put a sign there warning people.

They've made it a bit more obvious today, even putting the butcher statue outside the gate.<div>Inside the gate it looks like this:</div><div><br></div><div><img src="http://i974.photobucket.com/albums/ae221/Redarkady/IMAG0049.jpg"><br></div>

Chatted to the delightful Mr Godfrey today while buying all the meats. Lovely man. Very, very keen to keep the freehold on the site. He says the pop-up has been busy, so a permanent shop is a distinct possibility - though he wants to see what effect the eventual Wells Terrace closure will have before committing.<div><br></div><div>Longer term, he speculated about redeveloping that corner with a factory/shop on the ground floor, maybe paid for by leasing out the upper floors. That would be amazing. </div>
  • It shall henceforth be called Godfrey's Corner
  • <div>I still think Tonys the butcher sells the best meat in our area, had some sirloin today it was some of the best I ever had , beautiful, and they get it from the same wholesaler at Smithfield as Godfrey does , the only difference is the price, as you will see if you compare them.</div>
  • Yep, agree on the above.... Tonys is excellent and I'm surprised that there is a call for another butcher in the area..... especially when we have one supplying the same meat for lower cost.
  • Left work early to pop by to treat myself to some of kebabs or something I could bung under the grill and there was nothing there (5.30).... Booooo
  • Does anyone know if this pop-up shop is still running?<div>I thought it was, judging from the signs outside. But I walked in there today and there didn't seem to be anything open</div>
  • Think it was just while they were being refurbished. Hope they bring it back though.
  • You can still order meat from them online and pick it up at the warehouse: http://www.godfreys.co/
  • If Tony and Godfrey both get their meat from the same place at Smithfield, which I don't doubt, what makes people think Godfrey's is better? Is it just the pretty shop front, is Godfrey's service better or is it that people equate cost with quality even though it's the same product? You can go to Smithfield and choose your meat yourself, cutting out the middle man altogether. Some of you probably work very nearby.
