I notice there are now tables in what was the old bar space. I think this is a good idea, you can see people eating there which makes it look more inviting.
I too walk past this place every day, and my heart sinks every time. I have nothing against hipsters, burritos, cocktails in jam jars, neon or beards. But I just think that that blue light, gloomy interior and terrible layout are a complete turnoff, and I fail to see why the present highly deserving owners fail to see this too.
The blue lighting is awful but probably cost a fair bit. As they are probably not quite covering their costs yet I imagine they'd be loath to shell out on replacing it.
The biggest (and most cost effective) difference would be a slight change of paint colour.
The chap adores burritos but the dinginess puts us off, I really hope they fix it.
The menu is being tweaked, I hear they are getting a 'Tex' expert to complement their 'Mex' man in the kitchen. The burritos are already sublime, so it will be interesting to see whether they can improve further (I hope they don't touch the chilli dog, which is already perfection).<div><br></div><div>As well as the tables being moved around they have raised the window sign, and are repainting the black walls and ceiling white. So those who thought it uninviting may have their wishes granted.</div>
I thought the cow burrito was great, but my dining partner thought the burger was just ok. I wanted to like the onion rings, but they were so spicy I couldn't actually eat them!
For my part it's because it's the best place to get burgers and burritos in SG, and they also have a beer range that's right up my alley. Also the proprietor is a very nice chap who deserves to succeed (and who is paying attention to constructive criticism on SG.org, which gives him localism points in my book).
Those were the details i missed in their sign.<div><br></div><div>I will definitely visit more often, they are showing attention to customer feedback etc. It is going to be great.</div><div><br></div><div>I love the food in there and would like to go quite often, but it's the overall atmosphere that lacked something (and also some of the staff to be completely honest).</div><div><br></div><div>With the student building few meters away now they can really take it to the next level</div>
<p>So, I popped in to have a look on my way home., looks much warmer and more inviting. I met the owner, who is absolutely charming.</p><p>Going to persuade the chap to try the burritos.</p>
I am working really hard to make this place much more what you are all asking for, but I can't do this overnight.... I get it, you don't like the overall feel of the place. You'd all much prefer it to be more crouch end than shoreditch, that's fine. I will continue to work 90 hours a week to make it all that you want it to be.
Rome wasn't built in a day, but until I come on here with a 'street burger, Phase 3' post, please judge me on the food, not the decor at this stage, because I can't change it in a hurry.
For those that refuse to enter because of the decor, you're missing out on an awesome food offering. Simple as that.
As per the sign..... Hmmmm well that bit cost me £2,000 so I take replacing it very seriously. And the bottom line is that I don't have the funds to change it right now, but I will if I continue to get negative feedback on here. Providing I get the funds from the business. I'm also looking at a lighter interior, better more comfortable seating and have replaced recent troublesome staff.
I have taken over the running of the place personally, and I'm flat out trying to get it right.
Please be fully aware that I looked into the process of selling this site as a back up plan and almost had my arm bitten off by 3 corporate giants. I want this site to stay independent so please come and show your support, but if it continues to stay as is, it will be closed and sold by spring most likely to become another coffee giant.
I have already raised the sign so you can see inside, put friendlier seats in the window, covered up the gas meter in the window, painted over the black mural, half finished painting the black back wall and will be painting the ceiling to brighten the place, cladding the bar, building more soft fixed seating, putting lots of mirrors on the back wall to reflect natural light and much much more.
Come online and criticise me all you like, i won't go away easily.... I will fight to keep this site as I've put every ounce of my heart into it. Tony
Good luck Tony<div><br></div><div>I love the food and the place looks very good now.</div><div><br></div><div>I really like the spirit and the fact that you are reading comments here. It shows a lot of commitment.</div><div><br></div><div>You deserve success, and we don't want other chains, so keep it up!</div><div><br></div><div>Will be visiting again soon.</div><div><br></div><div><br></div>
As a quick add on to this I have also put a bigger menu in the window for you to browse and am in talks with a specialist to add a much better value draught beer line. The issue here is space but I'll make it work, somehow.
Sounds good to me, I'll certainly pop down in the next week or so to check out the changes and try out some more of the menu. It's an admirable effort - can't be easy running a restaurant in an area with so much competition. Those students on your doorstep should be a massive boon though
Those students are not like art students were when I was one. They've got a bit of cash to spend, they are in Starbucks every morning spending £3 on a coffee and fortunes on instant organic everything in Tesco. I think your prices are absolutely fine.
<p>Just to stress Tony's point here, if we don't spend money at our local indies they will not survive.</p><p>We have all moaned about Costa, Starbucks, Tesco etc. and yearned for small indepently owned businesses. We have some, now it's up to us to support them. </p>
And to those who are sceptical of the décor - they do takeaway. And I can confirm that a foil-wrapped burrito stays hot even when W3-d all the way to Mount View Road.
I had a burrito from Street a few weeks ago and it really was very good. Whether or not the decor is to your taste, if you're keen to support local business then please do give it a go.
A social there would be a great idea.<div><br></div><div>@ajl2503, take heart - if we weren't keen to see StreetN4 succeed, we wouldn't be talking about it! I didn't know you did takeaway till Arkady mentioned it...and you are almost on my doorstep...hmmm....</div>
