Would improve the environment by the station by creating a small car-free area. I can imagine the new coffee place having tables outside, Perhaps it would encourage other business to this neglected spot.  </div>

  • Excellent idea. I lived up that way, years ago. Signed.<div><br></div>
  • This is a good idea - especially if they actually do use the space as promised for library events and market stalls.  Trying to think of some more spaces that could be similar - maybe Clifton Terrace if the buses are diverted for the station upgrade?  That could help offset some of the lost trade that the station entrance closure will cause.
  • Speaking for myself as one of the local councillors I would welcome an ideas as to how to breathe new life into this area. For those that are interested, I've been talking to local shopkeepers on the parade in the past month on this very theme including Ben, who has opened Butfirst, a new coffee shop a few steps away from Harringay BR which I'm happy to recommend to everyone. He is especially keen to talk to local residents about what we can do on the parade as am I and my fellow Labour colleagues.<br><br><br>
  • Raj<div><br></div><div>I assume the rents here are high for the amount of passing trade as there are often boarded up shops on this stretch.  Is there anything the Council can do re tax breaks or anything to make life easier for the traders? I really hope the new cafe makes a go of it but it's very small so outside tables would no doubt help it thrive - especially if a bit of investment was made in planting or similar to make it feel more pleasant.  </div><div><br></div><div><br></div>
  • Trainspotter<br><br>I'm not so sure whether the issue is high rents or market conditions. I am aware that a number of the shops on the parade have now been converted to residential homes.<br><br>Given your obvious interest, I recommend that you pop in and speak to Ben as he has lots of ideas and can fill you in on what's happening on the street. He is also regularly in contact with me. <br><br>
  • It is a neglected although very sweet spot of the ward.<div><br></div><div>It is very nice walking by the street and the library.</div><div><br></div><div>It would also be the perfect spot to have some acoustic live music during summer evening.</div><div><br></div><div>And some market stalls in the weekend would be more than welcome and popular.</div><div><br></div><div>Signed and hopefully we will see some movement soon </div>
  • I have just signed the petition as I think it's a very good idea. Two obvious problems on the street are firstly that bags of rubbish get left out and not put in wheelie bins and so then ripped apart by foxes; secondly the building work on top left seems to have been ongoing for a few years so skip has been almost ever present.
  • Dear All <br><br>Please let me correct a typo in one of my earlier posts - the owner of Butfirst coffee shop is a charming chap called Matt not Ben and I'm happy to recommend his establishment to everyone. He has just told me he is especially keen to talk to local residents about what we can do on the parade and anyone interested in signing the petition can contact him. <br>

    Interestingly, this is making some progress.<div>Some sort of part-pedestrianisation will occur, and there is a budget of £10k allocated.</div><div><span style="font-size: 10pt;"><br></span></div><div><span style="font-size: 10pt;">There will be a </span><a href="https://www.change.org/p/harringay-council-pedestrianise-quernmore-parade-n4/u/15197870" style="font-size: 10pt;">meeting</a><span style="font-size: 10pt;"> on Saturday at Stroud Green library to discuss the plans.</span></div><div><span style="font-size: 10pt;"><br></span></div><div><a href="https://www.change.org/p/harringay-council-pedestrianise-quernmore-parade-n4/u/15275754" style="font-size: 10pt;">The meeting is on now at 12:00.</a><br></div>
  • I think with all the roadworks going on, pedestrianising more streets will be a complete disaster - when will this madness end??
  • The bit they are thinking of pedestrianising is a cul de sac so just a glorified parking lot. Good idea, should be supported.
  • Where will those people park now?  They will just clog up streets around the area causing more parking congestion and traffic as people drive around looking for places to park. <div><br></div><div>Disaster, I tell you. </div>
  • Maybe if they then decided to get rid of their cars it would help in reducing congestion....
  • What a great idea! Then there would be no traffic for me and I could park where I liked
  • to paraphrase the three musketeers - all for verga and verga for all! Parking around the station is not too bad - particularly as it residential permit area.

So the gist is this - that end of Quernmore Rd can't be fully pedestrianised as the local business require vehicular access. However it has been agreed that a small area at the very end of the road by Harringay Station will be closed to vehicles, and the road surface raised to the same level as the pavement in order to create a public space. The £10,000 ward budget for Stroud Green ward is going to be exclusively spent on this. It will reserve the space for additional work, such as better surfacing, benches, trees etc., in future should funding be found. Work may well start before the end of the financial year.<div><br></div><div>The plans can be seen in this image:<br><div><br></div><div><img src="http://i974.photobucket.com/albums/ae221/Redarkady/IMAG0267.jpg"><br></div></div>
  • Some of you will have noted that the above works were carried out earlier this year following a grant from local councillors. Subsequently, local campaigners were been awarded money from the Tesco Bags of Help funding stream to carry out additional work on the pedestrianisation of the Quernmore Road cul-de-sac. Tesco award three amounts; £8k; £10k; and £12k. The scheme will definitely be given £8,000 but have the opportunity to increase this to either 10k or 12k between 31st October and 13th November via a voting system in local Tesco stores. A local PR company based in Stapleton Hall Road and a local architect have both donated their services. It would be great if as many residents as possible could pop into in their local Tesco to vote for the scheme. The link to the website created specifically for this project is: http://www.quernmoreroad.com
  • Voting in store opens today.
  • Good stuff, thanks Arkady.
  • Great idea and I love that stretch.... But First Coffee is excellent and they have started doing Italian food with some colleagues which is delicious and home made. They have breathed life into that little stretch, and more is welcome..
  • grennersgrenners Ferme Park Road, N4
But First Coffee is excellent and hopefully the planned improvements will be enough to improve the environment there. When I pass (not very often) here are always over flowing bins and skips....

Is there a green grocers opening there? I thought I could see a kind of vintage/ironic/authentic, green grocer look in the new shop being fitted out.
  • A greengrocer would be excellent, but I fear that look may be historic? Butfirst does great coffee, and I snaffled more of those Italian doughnut things than is decent at a recent children's party, but it is small. It'd be great if there was a bit more space outside. I believe the library had talked about using this area for events too. I love the library, and they do some brilliant things already so I have high hopes.
  • Voted. Annoying that Tesco doesn't make tokens available in the self-checkout area!
  • Just saw on FB that they got £10k from Tesco!

So who is in charge of making sure they don't waste it?
