Social at Stapleton Tavern, Sunday October 15th

edited October 2017 in Local discussion
Everybody invited to socialise, drinks and lunch with the Ancient Corporation of Stroud Green at the Stapleton Tavern on Sunday Oct 15th. Ordinary pub menu, buy your own booze and food (if you want). Meet other Stroud Greeners, swap your stories, and help resurrect the Ancient Corporation dining and drinking club (1773). No other agenda.

Musical (?) support from the Japan Crescent Pluckers.

Programme:

12.30-ish - Crescent Pluckers to strum for a bit

1.30 - table booked in the back room in the name of the Ancient Corporation

This is an 'Ancient Corporation of Stroud Green' initiative in the original setting just for fun (and not a brewery promotion). All welcome - just come! Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/corporationofstroudgreen/

  • Which month Oct or Nov?
  • Corrected. October - Sunday after next.
  • Hurrah, I'm actually (probably) in London that day, looking forward to it!

Edit: Thoroughly endorse your by-law proposal, Gardener-Joe, now that I’ve read it through properly with humour function switched on. Ancient Corporation By-Law Proposals Board will be arranged. Further suggestions welcome.
  • Can anyone come up with new lyrics to the Stroud Green Song?

Bring them to the Ancient Corporation social on Oct 15th!

Topical if possible. Old lyrics (1773)in here somewhere: https://t.co/FXq6idfBAQ
  • There was a cafe
    And another cafe
    And another cafe
    And yet another cafe
    All hail Stroud Green

    There was a barber shop
    And another one
    And another one
    And yet another one
    All hail Stroud Green

    Finally we have a Vietnamese
    And another
    And a Thai
    And another
Where would we be without Stroud Green?

There was a young man north of Watford gap

Who had a fantastic idea for an app

With some help from daddy and auntie Irene

He bought a flat in edgy Stroud Green

The app was a flop and did not flower

People just did not want to rent cats for an hour

So now he lurks in coffee shops with his Mac

Before riding his fixed speed to home and back

In the evening it is time to get occasionally lary

Especially when drinking IPA in the Dairy

This is the end of the little ditty

Of what can happen to newbies in this city

The best thing to do to be king of the scene?

Join in with the Ancient Corporation of Stroud Green

While I finalise my entry for the new Song for Stroud Green lyrics - here are few possible topics for conversation at the Ancient Corporation social on Sunday.

Who’s up for a serious professional tree identification walk in Finsbury Park? New restaurant and cafe try-outs? How to support Park Theatre? Football - Gooner or Spurs? Innovative ways to enhance local identity? Developing SG.Org as a local resource? Pet minding? Future of the Farmer’s Market? Finish the Map of Unknown Stroud Green? New music for the Stroud Green Song (1773)? Reinstate duelling in Finsbury Park? Jumpers over or under shirts?

The Stapleton Tavern from 12.30pm (Chandelier Room). A couple of songs from the Crescent Pluckers at 12.30pm, and we’ve booked one table for lunch from 1.30pm. Numbers flexible. No fixed agenda, no speeches, no politics, no Brexit or religion. Just local chat - please treat this as a Stroud Green Org occasional social if you want.

All welcome - come and have a laugh with other locals. Pay as you go (normal pub menu if eating). Numbers flexible.

Put the word round. The Mayor and I hope to see a few people there.

My own proposal for By-Law No 2 - severe punishment for people feeding pigeons or squirrels on the street. Possibly involving being locked in one of the bicycle lockers with a squirrel, two hungry foxes and a rat for an hour or two.
  • The Stroud Green Song, 2017

To the tune of ‘Penny Lane’

Down Stroud Green Road there is a deli selling sausages
And a wine bar if you’re really in the know
And all the people that come and go
    Stop and say hello

On the corner is a beer shop stocked with alcohol
And the brothers there know everyone in town
There’s a balloon shop further down
And a wig shop chain…very strange

[Chorus] Stroud Green Road is in my ears and in my eyes
    There beneath the inner-city skies
I sit outside the Stapleton, and meanwhile back

In Stroud Green Road there is a Mackem with a restaurant
Cooking battered fish and chips with curry sauce
He likes to chop and fry and without remorse
    He’s from Sunderland, of course

At the crossroads are the Dairy and the Stapleton
And the Mind shop selling clothes and books to-go
Ready meals from Sainsbury Local if you’ve got the dough
    As a last resort - there’s always Tes-co

[Chorus] Stroud Green Road is in my ears and in my eyes
    There beneath the inner-city skies
I sit outside Vittorio’s, and meanwhile back

In Stroud Green Road there are the homeless at the railway bridge
Sleeping soundly as commuters pass them by
And we all wonder why they choose to lie
There. Or are they just high?

Round the corner is a theatre where some famous names
Venture off the beaten track, leave Islington behind
But for most in N4 it’s the daily grind
And a pint in the World’s End

[Chorus] Stroud Green Road is in my ears and in my eyes
    There beneath the inner-city skies
I sit inside the Fullback, and meanwhile back

In Stroud Green Road the barber shaves another customer
We see estate agents in a row waiting for a trim
The pizza parlour man is full of vim
He just had that Jeremy Cor-byn

At the bus stop there are buses going everywhere
Muswell Hill, Wood Green, Tottenham and Crouch End
We see a bus go past - the W7
    It’s the bus to heaven!

[Chorus] Stroud Green Road is in my ears and in my eyes
    There beneath the inner-city skies
I sit outside the Brave Sir Robin, hopefully, and meanwhile back

In Stroud Green Road may peace and plenty ever smile
We’re the best street in this city by a mile
Here’s health, success, prosperity to this association
Fill every glass, and drink with me
    To Stroud Green Corporation!
  • Rubbish.

Also, you forgot the White Lion of Mortimer
  • First sign of madness.

I thought that was when you suddenly hear somene say 'this is the heavy heavy moster sound' out of the pub speakers?
  • 12 places for lunch at the social, but plenty of room in the pub. Special sax accompaniment to the Crescent Pluckers. Don't miss it.
  • Bah, I'm snowed under with work (and in Brighton) so I probably won't be able to make it tomorrow after all * gnashes teeth * Unless... how late do you think you'll all be at the pub tomorrow? I was so looking forward to this, d*mn it...

Report: About 15-20 people came. The first people arrived 12.30pm, last people went around 4.30pm. It was a nice social, though looked like not many people from stroudgreen.org came, most heard about it through other networking. Mayor arrived fashionably late. The band.....brilliant performance guys. Music and special Stroud Green words from the Crescent Pluckers, some genius rewrote classic popular songs to include 'Stroud Green' and 'Stapleton' in the words - an absolute hoot. The Stapleton does a good Sunday lunch for those who ordered it. Drinks. Chat.

Lessons: next time we'll try to start later, say 2.30pm, and possibly on a Saturday or weekday instead of Sunday (which had been arranged around football). We hope next time to book the long table at the back. Next - perhaps a Christmas social with the Ancient Corporation and the Crescent Pluckers, date tbc?.

And I hope to be joining them on sax next time.....

    Success!
