Toyota Prius key hack - any local victims?

edited February 2018 in Local discussion
One of our neighbours (a driver) has a Toyota Prius. This morning his car was mysteriously broken into probably using an electronic key hack - which apparently these kind of cars are vulnerable to. The thieves use a ‘little black box’ which opens the car using a transponder to amplify and activate your car key code, even if the key is sitting yards away in your house:

No doors or windows were smashed (and nothing was taken) and the car was left locked.

So presumably some gang tooled up with one of these devices is cruising the area looking for high-spec cars vulnerable to hacking. So, put your car keys in the freezer (read the New York Times article). And any other reports of this happening locally?
