Next Book Club: 21st March, Muriel Spark

8pm @The White Lion pub, Stroud Green Road

For our March Book Club we'll be reading 'Loitering with Intent' by Muriel Spark.

New members always welcome! We are usually near the back of the pub and will have a copy of the book out on the table.

Nominated for the Booker prize in 1981, it's a mere 224 pages long so it'll be a snap to read.

Synopsis
Art, reality and the strange ways the two imitate one another are at the core of Muriel Spark's delightful Loitering with Intent. Would-be novelist Fleur Talbot works for the snooty, irascible Sir Quentin Oliver at the Autobiographical Association, whose members are all at work on their memoirs. When her employer gets his hands on Fleur's novel-in-progress, mayhem ensues when its scenes begin coming true. Generating hilarious turns of phrase and larger-than-life characters (especially Sir Quentin's batty mother), Spark's inimitable style make this literary joyride thoroughly appealing.

Comments

  • Interested to join (but can't make the March date). Is it always the 3rd Wednesday of the month?
  • We have a more flexible approach. We compare diaries and decide on a new date at the end of each book group. But it is usually on a Wednesday and there's a good chance the next one will be exactly a month later. Hope you'll be able to make it.
