It isn't really shocking any more that children are carrying knives. Absolutely horrifying yes, but not surprising. It's become a routine thing that many kids in some areas - including our bit of North London just do. More stop and search (I know adult non knife carrying people don't like it), would help.
Education and persuasion takes a long time to work.
This is nothing new in London, it just dropped a few years ago due to surveillance.
Some tube stations used to be a nightmare at times for muggers.
In fact before there were cameras everywhere i remember much more knife crime, the difference then was that there was also squats, drugs and street prostitution everywhere as well, bizarrely it is going full circle (except squats of course).
On the basis that the thread was posted after initially an 11 year old had been implicated (no longer the case), I'd hope most people were at least surprised. When I was 11, i wasn't even allowed to the nearest town on my own, and i watched Byker Grove on TV.
I know that times have changed, and i am acutely aware of crime in our area, but that was a genuine shock and had that transpired would have a been a lead national news story for days. Pretty sorry state of affairs that once that element of the story has gone, that 14 year olds stabbing 14 year olds is just another of many London stories for the year. Normalised, when it is absolutely not normal.
When I was a kid, growing up in East London and Essex we roamed about in small pairs or groups of girls with no fear. From age 11 we walked 30 mins to the swimming pool, 25 mins to school. Different times. I agree it is incredible that we are no longer surprised and I wish I had any constructive advice on how to change this culture.
