Neighbourhood Watch Updates. Local Area

Hi All,

I had the following update from local police, which I thought would be of interest to people in the area:

1. Sexual Assaults:

Detectives from the Met's North Area Command Unit are investigating a group of sexual assaults in the Hornsey, Crouch End and Stroud Green area.

In each incident, the victims, who have all been females walking alone, were approached by a man riding a moped, who has followed the victims and sexually assaulted them before fleeing.

On 3 March a 23-year-old woman was walking in Malvern Road N8 when she was assaulted at 01:17hrs.

On 16 March a 29-year-old woman was assaulted in Despard Road N19 (Islington) at 01:00hrs.

On 29 March a 22-year-old woman was assaulted in Despard Road N19 (Islington) at 00:10hrs

On 29 March a 14-year-old girl was assaulted in The Broadway at 20:45hrs.

On 30 March a 29-year-old woman was assaulted at 22:40hrs in Nelson Road N8.

On 18 April a 19-year-old woman was assaulted in Lancaster Road N4 at 22:15hrs.

The man was described as riding a moped with a box on the back, suggesting he is possibly working as a courier or delivery driver, or fast food worker. He is generally described as wearing dark clothing.

Detective Inspector Pete Dyche, of the North Area Command Unit, is leading the investigation. He said: "we are keeping an open mind as to any links amongst these crimes. We are carrying out a number of urgent enquiries as part of our investigation and are doing our utmost to catch the perpetrator(s).

“I would advise that anyone walking alone in the evening in these areas to be mindful of their surroundings and to report any suspicious activity to police immediately.”

Anyone who has information that might assist the investigation to call or 101 or email P228017@met.police.uk quoting CAD 694/3MAR19

Alternatively, tweet @MetCC. Information can be submitted anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

2. Bogus call purporting to be from the police

Just to make you aware that one of our coordinators has received a phone call from someone identifying himself as PC Murphy from Shepherds Bush Police Station in relation to her debit card. The caller hung up immediately when challenged and asked how she could be certain he was a police officer. Our coordinator correctly informed her bank card provider who confirmed there had been no strange activity on the card and also called 101.

3. Fly-tipping – help the council fight back!

If you actually see somebody committing a fly-tip, there is a form on the Haringey Council website which allows you to make a report, including uploading a picture:
https://www.haringey.gov.uk/environment-and-waste/rubbish-and-recycling/street-cleansing/dumped-rubbish-enforcement

Even if you have not caught someone in the act, you can still file a report with Haringey to get the rubbish removed. The quickest and easiest way is by downloading the free 'Our Haringey' app from either the App Store or the Google Play Store. If you report through the app, you will also get progress updates.

A slightly less high-tech option is to visit the Haringey website and make a report online here: https://www.haringey.gov.uk/environment-and-waste/refuse-and-recycling/street-cleansing/fly-tipping-and-dumped-rubbish

Finally, you may be interested in reading through Haringey Council's new fly-tipping strategy, which suggests that the problem is far more serious in the east of the borough: https://www.minutes.haringey.gov.uk/documents/s107966/Appendix 1 - Flytipping strategy v4 FINAL.pdf.

4. Burglary Warning – Window Cleaners

Two well-known Islington burglars have been seen just across the border in Haringey with ladders and buckets with them; both are known to pose as window cleaners.
They are white males with Irish accents, approx. 40 – 50 years old, one has a tattoo’s on his neck.

Never employ anyone who cold calls offering a service!
