    particularly if you wish to elongate it to nobber, knobber just doesn't look right.

    Just look at it. nob Comically superior to knob Although i think that in fact they mean different things, and knob is probably correct in this context! "k/nob-head" was very much a favourite put-down at my school. I should say 'cuss', and not sound my age, but that will always be reserved for "your mum..." cusses.

    a nob is a measurement of butter, knob is for the other things (doors, insults, appendages)

    I don't quite get the comic value of a silent letter. Is nat funnier than gnat? I'm not laughing at either.
