Alexa

edited October 2009 in About this site
Yesterday I met with Hugh of Harringay Online and we shared stories of mutual tinpot dictatorship. One thing he pointed me at was sgr's Alexa ranking, which is apparently quite high for a neighbourhood site. <http://www.alexa.com/siteinfo/stroudgreen.org>; Yeah - we're the 36,000th biggest site in the UK. Eat that facebook.

Can't believe the term 'face count' hasn't made that term list. @me: _must try harder_

That is quite high. I wonder how many people have the Alexa toolbar installed these days though, especially given that Vista classifies it as malware.

Alexa also gets much of its data from other (more reliable) sources than the toolbar these days, but it's still (a) heavily biased to the US and (b) of dubious reliability.

For those keeping track - latest Lynne News through the door has a face count of two per page. It starts and ends well with a reasonable one per page but gets all gratuitous on page 3 with a count of three and what at first I thought was two on page 2 but then noticed her blue shirt in the background of a picket or something and there she was in another photo to up it from 1.75 to 2. Thank you for watching.

I have to say I tend to bin anything that comes through that has her face on it prominently.

It comes across as an advert for the public servant, rather than what the effect of their work is. ie - I would rather see happy pensioners rejoicing at the revoked license outside a lap dancing club, rather than a photo of an smug MP with the subtext: "I did this, me, I'm great vote for MeMeMe!"
