Wedding venue

edited February 2010 in Local discussion
My other half and I have just got engaged... which is very exciting, except that I'm totally freaking out about how much the wedding is potentially going to cost. We've worked out we'd like to invite about 100 people. We're happy to get married in a registry office locally and go to a local restaurant or pub, as long as there's a private room we can all sit in, get drunk and then go dancing. I'd ideally like to spend no more than £2,000 on the entire wedding, which i appreciate is ambitious... Has anyone got any suggestions? help would be much appreciated!

    Congratulations DonnaW.

    I look forward to hearing about your plans at the next book club gathering.

    Congrats. We've found that the most cost-effective thing is to get engaged then sort of forget about it

    andy - we did that and even took the ring back. Saved lots of money that way.

    Marraige is great so here is something more positive The Pump Room Cafe at Stoke Newington West Reservoir is a great space and has a decking area outside which over looks the Reservoir, Can be hired reasonably cheaply, you would need to do your own drinks, food disco etc so it would be a visit to Majestic wine etc. I went to a great party there last summer which was a delayed (by 20 years) wedding party ! See http://viewer.zmags.co.uk/publication/f8e7bb78#/f8e7bb78/54 Another good place is the Highgate Society which has hall just off Pond Square http://www.highgatesociety.com/ Lauderdale House also hires out and would be nice http://www.lauderdalehouse.co.uk/ Seen receptions in Sugar Lounge, Dairy and Chapter One and then if want it cheap then there is always the WLM.

    We talked to Dairy and were really keen but they wanted an £8k guarantee - perfectly understandable given the size, their turnover on a weekend night plus hassle for them and regulars but too much for us. It is a big space and not easy to section off because of the bar set up. They were really helpful And it might be much better if you don't ind just booking a space. Sugar house was another runner - £3k for them and perfect for 100 people I think although some doubt over toilets. Pump house good venue, particulaly if not eating. Anything with outside catering is expensive to do.

    Tell the Dairy you're just having a massive meeting of bookclub.

    My brother got married at Islington Town Hall, then we all walked around the corner to the Marquess Tavern (by the New River) for lunch.

    They've got a nice back room, but not self contained. And there were only 8 of us.

    I was wondering this the other day. Now seems like a good time to ask. Have any romances blossomed between members of SG.org?

    Not the few couples on here, who I'm asusming were couples anyway. But any brand new SG.org introduced relationships?

    Wow, some really helpful comments here. Lauderdale House looks amazing - have sent an email asking about availability. And the Pump Room looks goood too, and I've emailed the Candid Arts Cafe. Thanks so much - if anyone has any more tips they'd be much appreciated, it's so hard in London not to get ripped off when you get married!

    Congratulations, how exciting.

    We held our reception at the camden canal museum near kings x. A very neat venue. About 600 pounds five years ago. You can bring your own food and drink. I cannot send you the link though as i am on my phone. Mum and dad paid for us to arrive by barge, but you don't have to do that.

    Yay! Congratulations Donna W.

    Can only really recommend the place in NZ where we did it (The Church, Hahei, Coromandel). You should be able to come within budget. Guests might be a bit thin on the ground though.

    Perhaps more appropriate for coromandel.org?

    My ex's family had a bach near Hahei, lovely part of the world..

    hello,

    I'm having exactly the same issues - trying to find an inexpensive wedding venue that would allow you to provide your own alcohol and catering. I've emailed the West Reservoir, so fingers crossed!

    @missisclack
    I wondered about that too but do people from the forum meet each other in the real world? Apart from at our new book club of course.

    We went to an excellent wedding reception at the steam museum in Kew - sounds geeky but was actually brilliant. Very atmospheric. Granted it's not exactly handy for Stroud Green. I have no idea how much it cost to hire but it wasn't a flash wedding so I'd be surprised if it was very expensive. http://www.kbsm.org/hire

    Congratulations - DonnaW

    When I got married we managed to do it for under £2000 with 75 guests, we hired a hall from the council (in Broxbourne so not local but it was lovely) and did our own catering and drink. The food was a buffet which we (and friends and family) prepared in advance and some friends of my Mum's manned it and helped set it all up so the guests didn't have to. Most guests didn't realise we hadn't got in outside caterers.

    For the drinks we bought a few bottles of wine and water for each table then for the evening had polypins of real ale, boxes of wine and a selection of soft drinks for people to help themselves to, which worked really well.

    My Mum also made my dress and the cake which helped save money!

    The marriage didn't work out but we're both still good friends and agree it was a really good do. Doing a lot ourselves made it feel a lot more personal and more 'us'.

    If you are having bridesmaids, a number of my friends have used this N4 based etailer! I think they are based over in the Fiorentina clothing village .... anyway, they do made to measure, fantastic fast turnaround, oh and they are affordable. <http://www.styleshake.com/>;
