Book group suggestions

edited April 2010 in Local discussion
sorry to go on about the book group but i thought it might be a good idea to have a thread where people can make suggestions for future books. the very slim czech volume that i brought along was 'too loud a solitude' by bohumil hrabal ([amazon](http://www.amazon.co.uk/Too-Loud-Solitude-Bohumil-Hrabal/dp/0349102627)). another book that i read last year and absolutely loved was 'the brief wondrous life of oscar wao' by junot diaz ([amazon](http://www.amazon.co.uk/Brief-Wondrous-Life-Oscar-Wao/dp/0571239730/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1272474908&sr=1-1)). it's about the dominican republic which i knew nothing about, but i found it really fascinating. anyone else got anything to suggest? (apart from borges. please no borges).

I loved The Brief Wondrous LIfe of Oscar Wao too and Bohumil Hrabal has been on my reading list for ages, so I'd support both suggestions. I am quite fascinated by Roberto Bolano's 2666, but that may put many off with its many pages. What about something shorter by David Foster Wallace? I have not yet read The Broom of the System.

I will suggest Daphne Du Maurier - 'The Birds and Other Stories' as my first choice, however, if people would prefer a novel rather than short stories we could go for 'The Scapegoat', a novel set in the 20th century or 'Frenchman's Creek' a historical drama.

Whilst not a bookclubber, I've just read "The Privileges" by Jonathan Dee, which I thought was really good.

Was thinking maybe it would be cool to read a Sherlock Holmes novel as well, seeing as he's back in vogue ;)

The only one of the novels I've read is A Study In Scarlet, but I'd warn against that as Doyle hadn't necessarily realised yet how central Sherlock should be, so half of it is Love Amongst The Mormons with no sign of Holmes.
