TV fans of yesteryear will fondly recall the delightful series, The Flumps (Perkin, Pootle etc...who could forget?!).

Now The Flumps are on the long list for consideration by Disney as a 3D remake - which may sound a little odd as I don’t remember it for special effects and car chases: I only hope they don’t set it in Boston or cast Cameron Diaz as Pootle. However it could make a charming big screen family treat.(Although this recent reinterpretation is a cause for anxiety: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yDlSc_zerzw&feature=related
The startling thing is that apparently The Flumps were created (born one might almost say) in Stroud Green which is little known (it was news to me). But that is about to change.
The inventor lived in or around Lorne Road although it’s not clear if the masterworks were filmed there. The connection is underlined because the Flumps live in ‘Silly Green’ which is an obvious reference to you-know-where. Come to think of it, very little has changed. I’ve seen quite of those distinctive hats around too.
Come 'green light' and Disney wants to boost publicity and tentative plans are developing to put a commemorative plaque or statue in the green area outside Charter Court (I think it’s called). I’m guessing this will be like the exhibit at Marble Arch which is nice enough for a temporary exhibit but I would not like to live with it forever.

Obviously I’m glad if SG gets a bit of attention, and I love the Flumps, but I can’t help thinking there are public figures or local heroes more deserving of a statue in a prime spot (Mother Teresa, Bob Hoskins, Simon Pegg, Johnny Rotten, Ho Chi Minh?) . Anyway that is one for Harringey planning committee to agonise over...
Of course the 3D bubble may burst before the Flumps ride again, but here’s hoping for a Golden Globe for best hat.

Still we are planning a Flump table at the Regina Rd royal wedding street party 29 April (afternoon)- no need for costumes (probably hard to find these days) but if your kids are keen get them to wear a Pootle hat. Ok?
