why was "slabber" banned from sg.org?

edited November 2011 in About this site
you can tell if anyone has been banned by clicking on their name in a thread and it says "member" or "banned". if you put "slabber" into the search engine and click on "slabber",it reads "Roles: banned".but why was he/she banned and what are the rules of posting on this forum? slabber was mentioned on a thread called, "iv'e tried....really i have";and on a thread called "face it writing on a website about an area is well boring maybe even rubbish let's discuss".i wasn't a fan of slabber but it seems a bit "soviet union" that a member of the forum disappears without any comment on his disapearance how can you be banned for breaking rules if it isn't clear what the rules are in the first place, doesn't seem fair.

  • There seems to be only one rule: ‘don’t be a dick’. Even that rule is lightly policed. Slabber was often quite funny, but as his raison d'être was ‘being a dick’ he probably pushed a bit too far. I’m also a bit twitchy about his unannounced disappearance, but StroudGreen.org is not The Prisoner, and Slabber was not Patrick McGoohan. Our benevolent dictators are splendidly laissez-faire, and I can’t think of any other posters that I’d want as admins, myself included. Miss Annie comes close, but she’d probably insist on a hideous paisley background for the main page and run a password-only virtual sex dungeon from a hidden link in the Women’s Institute thread.
  • never apologise, never explain
  • sgsteve was banned too.click on thread called,"from april islington council will fine people for not recycling", then click on sgsteve name and it comes up as "banned". for what? banned for making a principled stand against islington council's right wing plan to fine people for not recycling? so if you flag up how islington council are too right wing and draconian you get banned? i don't get the logic, or consistency, of the decision making on banning peeps? Banned for being eccentric; and not conforming to some politically correct rules? if you forget your password you can't log in, so you have to apply for new membership under a new name, not anything dishonest in that is there?
  • Wasn’t sgsteve one of the regular rambling surrealist trolls under a new name? Oh… hang on…
  • slabber is innocent.Free the slabber one. slabber deserves better and to be given a second chance - that's freedom of speech but arkady - hasn't slabber got a right to be antagonistic,to provoke debate "never apologise, never explain" - well at least that is honest - sounds like the thought police, the german stasi police, or soviet pravda newspaper journalists 2 me. its all a bit big brother,or perhaps like a dictator in a country which wont be getting democracy for many years.is that what sg.org stands for? a dictatorship where people are carted off in the middle of the night bundled into the back of a metaphorical police van in a straight jacket never to be seen again, just askin.surely if someone is banned it should be explained to everyone so that we know why someone has got the bullet and been silenced or sacked. "banned" - its a bit "daily mail" banning people with no explanation - a bit "big brother is watchig you" - innocent until proven guilty shurely
  • Daniel Ortega has just been re-elected
  • I'm unemployed now, yawn.
  • shurely shome mistake on the harringayonline forum on a thread called "stroudgreen.org on harringay online" , andy wrote: "I have never edited a post nor banned a member (with the exception of some spammers)." so how do you explain banning "slabber" or "sgsteve" - slabber wasn't spamming just exercising his right to express himself in a different way to others.and some people liked slabber as he could be amusing and wasnt a politically correct mr nice clone tosscat - you yawn alot, perhaps you should see a gp for that, sorry to hear you are on the rock and roll you must be barassic me old son. off to the battle cruiser for some britney spears - shame they banned people standing outside the white lion of mortimer having a fag - only diners in the window seats now
  • andy, or whoever runs this forum -why not just admit that you ban people if you feel like it,perhaps because they aren't your type of person, without giving them or anyone else on the forum an explanation, or if you feel like being a control freak that day? Rather than going on harringay online and explaining yourself and saying you don't ban people. What happened to being tolerant of diversity in the local community?
  • Arkady, you wrote "rambling surrealist troll",are your " large brain -egg head" essays ever "rambling",perhaps.I quite enjoy what you write though even if you do " ramble on a bit" sometimes.A troll is someone who purely provokes and never tries to be serious. I believe that Andy n David used to ban those who started threads about their pets.Disgracefull really and quite shocking,I think, especially for dog lovers, woooooof!
  • Hmmm - does chrisn4's ip address match that of any previous posters?
  • Democracy? Freedom of speech? Dude, the United Kingdom is not a democracy and we have no legal right to free speech. As for banning people from here being "Disgracefull really and quite shocking" - seriously? Dude, if you don't like this little corner of the Internet go find another...
  • tosscat,if one was living in a shared house wouldn't one share an ip address with one's royal housemates? for example, The Queen, gawd bless her, may well share an ip address with prince harry, although perhaps Her Majesty and Prince Harry may visit very different websites of an evening. yagamuffin,I do find your name amusing,a sort of cross between an aga and a hot bun.Reminds me of childhood visits to the English countryside, hot buttered crumpets, cups of tea, muddy welly boots, bonfires and songs of praise on tv, such happy days.I take issue with your logic however yagamuffin, I don't see why if one does not like certain aspects of this corner of the internet one should find another, why not stick with it and learn something.i find the erudite people of stroud green very educational and entertaining, even if some people do lower the tone occasionally what is this word "dude" as an Englishman i can't say it is a word i would ever use,but perhaps you are a sceptic tank? you have my permission to "carry on" with whatever you are doing...thanks gov...
  • For dude, see http://oxforddictionaries.com/definition/dude A North American slang word, apparently dating from the late 19th century Oh, and a sceptic tank I am not. Neither do I really consider myself and "Englishman" although technically I am. Devonian first, Briton second, European third.
  • a devonian and not a sceptic tank, reassuringly British and no mistake. a north american slang word you say, thanks for explaining the word "dude".Now that you mention it I do recall sometime ago one cold winters day as I was shivering with cold I went into a local ale house for a pint, while drinking my Guinness whilst sitting by a roaring log fire I flicked open the book I was reading,"Oliver Twist" and was momentarily lost in the wonderfull world of Charles Dickens,I was interupted by the barman who said "can I get you another beer dude", I am afraid I had to ask him to repeat himself as I had never been refered to as "dude" before,I prefer to be called "Sir". I was not unduely disturbed however and I settled down to read about the downright criminal behaviour of Bill Sykes, the artfull dodger and of course Fagin.
  • @Yagamuffin - I'm keen on multi-layered identities... but why skip English? Just curious.
  • Growing up in rural Devon with next to no non-whites there is no real identity crisis so there is no need to get so excited about being English. Since leaving Devon I have spent my time living with various people from all over the UK and the World. First and foremost I feel Devonian as that's where my roots are. After that, I guess because of the influence of living with Welsh and Scots I feel more British. In my experience the majority of people who refer to themselves as English have either spent time in the Armed Forces where fitting in to the correct ghetto based on nationality and/or skin colour is important, or live in an ethnically diverse area and feel the need to identify themselves as different to the rest. But this is getting on to a very different topic from the OP...
  • I describe myself to foreigners as being English. People form Scotland never say they are British. People from Wales never say they are British. People from Ireland never say they are British. Why do people from England who say they are English suddenly get aggro for being a BNP supporting racist skinhead? (or a member of the armed forces) IT IS THE NAME OF THE COUNTY I AM FROM.

How would you know to click on exactly those names? Even the admin pages don't have a full list of members. What a remarkable coincidence. Just remarkable.

How Andy looked while typing in that last comment:
  • Draw on a rougeish beard.
  • I have to say i enjoyed the commentary from our banned members, and felt that it all livened up rather dullard threads. Who would have thought that Recycling would have polarised so many people in north London. A good debate, even when it can be seen as a blatent wind-up, is perfectly fine by me. It seems a bit pointless doing any banning anyway, you just get a new name, email address and start again by all accounts!
  • I thought Devonian meant discussion about Trilobites
  • @Brodiej - as demonstrated by the very recognisae trademark sign off 'carry on' I consider myself a Londoner, English and then British despite having Irish, German and Jewish ancestors.
  •
andy - it is because i am a seeker of truth and justice...

if someone hasn't contributed for a while, click on their name,to see who big brother has banned in the dead of night without telling anyone...

as i enjoy what people write on this forum,it is my legal obligation to say

carry on

  • There are over 700 members who haven't posted in the last 6 months. You picked on those two.

That's very...efficient.
•
spank you very much

yes it was efficient...

if you click on and read the names of the threads i have already mentioned on this thread then you will see that sg.org regulars have commented in the past about how they noticed that slabber has been banned so they must have talked to him or clicked on his name to know he has been banned

doesnt really matter about these details however, its the principle of banning people without telling all the regulars that you have banned someone that is the issue, a point of principle

perhaps slabber or sgsteve deserved to be banned,i wouldnt know...dont know what the rules are...

just the idea of the "thought police" arriving in the dead of night and carting people off without telling the other punters, just seems a bit , well a bit cr-p

ultimately thought this is the internet ... so you can do what you want.. but if you value fairness then why not tell the punters when someone is banned why they have been banned...

just seems a bit colonel gadaffi libya dicatator to me not to explain to the punters what your game is with regard to banning people...

carry on

  • will you admit who you really are? in the name of fairness, honesty, truth and transparency?
