Nobel is going uphill

edited January 2012 in Local discussion
Had a brilliant meal there on Sunday with my in laws from down the road at Tollington and their friends from Lorne Rd. They are a VERY fussy bunch but were very impressed with food and service. Tasty .Worth another look. Chang

  • You can tell a place is going downhill when even their fans don't spell its name correctly.
  • Har har how I laughed miss annie
  • Misspelling is I agree unspeakably dreadful. But perhaps singular/plural disagreement ('a place'/'their fans'/'its name') whilst observing the same is risky too?<br><br>I'll go back to my glass house and stop throwing stones.<br>

My grammar is dreadful sometimes, I'll trade you your glass house for my mind palace.
  • <p>In my humble opinion, a mind palace is so much better than anal-retentive grammar rules.  Text talk  is not good though!</p>

Chang, even if Miss Annie couldn't kill you with a single blow - which she probably could - she is very popular.  And her fellah is Stroud Green's answer to Giant Haystacks.  Implied threats are inadvisable.  Also one of 'u 3' was effectively defending you.  Your failure to notice this will only raise further questions concerning your literacy.<br>

Sopranoes? Chris, c'mon. Chang Er. Carry On...?

I am not that big dude! I'm only 6' 6" and 21 stone, but I still can't do as much damage as Miss Annie when she uses her especially hard Paddington stare.
  • A 'mind palace' sounds a much better place to be I agree. Though I might go and put an offer in on that 'apperception alcazar' if it's still in Christopher Charles' window later. Glass houses are like <i>so</i> 2011.<br><br>I don't deny anal retentiveness (though that bit of Freud's a bit tired now, no? And anyway I'm rather fond of being able to defacate to order): but the observation I was (smilingly, not mockingly) prodding at was less the wrongness of a breach of a grammatical rule than the danger of making such a breach whilst in the act of observing someone else's.<br><br>Someone calls you a hypocrite, to which you respond 'hypocrisy is the homage that vice pays to virtue' and before you know it you're both off your heads on cheap red wine and slagging off each other's understanding of long-dead French philosophers for the rest of the night... I was just trying to save time and Bordeaux...!<br><br>
  • <P>Back to misspelling, it always bugs me that the sign at the entrance to Finsbury Park (Tollington Rd end) refers to byelaws. </P> <P>I've twice been overcharged at the Noble, unfortunately </P>
  • Hmm. You mean as opposed to by-law?<br><br>Quite a lot of people use the 'byelaw' spelling, and eg Fowler's says its forgiveable, with <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/By-law">Wikipedia </a>concurring.<br><br>In a railway context, 'byelaws' is arguably more than forgiveable - both <a href="http://www.southwesttrains.co.uk/uploads/nationalrailwaybyelaws.pdf">contemporary </a>and <a href="http://ukrailwayfaq.wikispaces.com/Railway+Byelaws">historic </a>railway regulations use/d precisely that spelling in their title. Those constructing the regulations might have got it wrong, but others subsequently referring to the same regulations must at least be forgiven for repeating the error.<br><br>And, at least in their old building, the House of Lords were guilty of the same '<a href="http://www.publications.parliament.uk/pa/ld199798/ldjudgmt/jd980402/bodd01.htm">infraction</a>' (admittedly when discussing those selfsame railway regulations).<br><br>But if that's the only thing that bugs you at the entrance to the tube in the mornings, I'd continue to focus ire at the sign if I were you...!<br>
  • RedSurgeon I am in your debt for removing a small irritant from my life (although the OED gives it as by-law, with no alternatives)
  • Wow Chang, great way to put people off both the Noble and the Nobel...<br>
  • Scroll back and you will find that an honest typo in a heartfelt positive message about a good local pub, attacked unfairly by local snobs, has become a bit of a kick-de-Chinaman-cos-he-can't-spell-Engleesh wank-fest. I get the message Miss Annie and others, really I do. I will be there on Sunday , having, I hope ,a good meal with Jonty, so enjoy your (ur) bye bye laws and come and challenge your prejudices . For once. Chang
  • <p>Hmmm, if you hadn't deleted your threatening messages people would see that it turned into something more than that.</p><p>And I had no idea that you were Chinese, names don't necessarily denote anything here. For example, I doubt that RedSturgeon is a fish.</p><p> </p>
  • The deleted messages log tells a different story, chang
  • I am half Chinese. I reacted to the antagonism, yes. But you were the first off the mark with a stab of sarcasm ms A. Andy, if someone is dissd for simply recommending a pub, is that not unreasonable ? Sorry if I reacted angrily (sp) but I was attacked for a basic thing. Passing on a tip bout locsl bar. honestly feel there is a hostile vibe here. Don't know why. I regret it. Chang
  • <p>No Chang N4N6 you threatened 3 people and called them a c**t and just deleted your posts. Sorry but be a man and stick to what you say, as far as I can see that's threatening women.</p>

@miss annie: RedSturgeon's not a fish? How can you be so sure?  I've seen pictures of fish on bicycles, which must be true becuause I saw them.<br><br><img src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_A3GOyr0yK3Y/TIzKVRVy0_I/AAAAAAAA3YQ/tMB7Ubndp5o/s320/Rollin%20fish%20on%20bike!.gif"><br>

  • To harp back to the unpleasantness, Chang, let's be very clear:  ms annie made a light-hearted comment about your spelling.   nothing about your ethnicity or background (which seem entirely irrelevant to this discussion - you don't have to be French to spell the Louvre correctly after all).  <div><br></div><div>In response to ms annie you *massively* over-reacted.  you could have entirely legitimately said that your spelling was neither here nor there and that the noble is still great.  </div><div><br></div><div>now, you obviously realise you've gone too far or else you wouldn't have deleted the posts.   how's about instead of acting like a 5 year old who has got caught out, you act more like a grown up and apologise?</div><div><br></div><div><br></div>
  • Go back to bossing your pupils about Gary, it doesn't work with me. That pub had been unfairly criticised . It is unfair on a business to post all these wrecking comments about it. And it is actually pretty good. Certainly not failing. I was picked on for defending it because I can't spell up to the standards of the village elders . And boy they dont like strangers, especially if you can't spell, knit or trade quips about byelaws. Which - I admit - I can't. For which I appologise (wrongly spelt I know). Good night. Chang.
