Giffgaff, anyone?

edited January 2013 in Sharing
As Vodafone seems to have taken a nosedive, and I'm back on Friday and will need a working phone network, I'm thinking of signing up for Giffgaff but wanted to see if anyone in the area is already using it, so that someone can get £5 credit out of it.

For those of you who don't know Giffgaff, here are the details: http://giffgaff.com/
;

 • Hi @harpistic, my partner is using it and it seems to work fine. Certainly better than Vodafone. It's on the O2 network, for what it's worth...
 • I was with giffgaff for three months last year while I was in between contracts. It's certainly good value for money if you don't need a new phone. But in those three months, there were two separate days when I didn't have service. And when that happens, there's nothing you can do, no one to complain to. Giffgaff's 'customer service' is a message board where people bitch about problems that don't get fixed.

When O2 has issues, they sort out their own customers first. People on the cheaper piggy-back networks have to wait.

I left giffgaff for an O2 contract. With even with cashback, it's more expensive than giffgaff, but I did get a much needed new phone. So far, the service has been fine.
harpistic - my vodafone signal has almost died completely at home - is this what you are talking about?
 • @rainbow_carnage - That's useful to hear; my mother visits the UK a few times each year, and I've lost the will to deal with Three's customer service ever again, so I was planning on switching her to Giffgaff for her next visit.

@drewpasmith How's the coverage in Stroud Green? I was still on O2 when I first visited the area and had no coverage at all, but then again, anything would probably be better than Vodafone at present!
• I've been on GiffGaff for about a year and a half now. Rainbow_carnage is right about the two days last year: The first was (oddly) caused by a burst water main in March and the other was something to do with O2.

I must say despite this I haven't even considered going back to contract - I'm still happy with them.
If you're interested then why not just give them a shot and see how you get on? You're not committing yourself to them
• Indeed - I was mostly asking in case anyone wanted a £5 credit, rather than me ordering a SIM from GiffGaff directly. And I've already had two requests for SIMs from friends! :)
• I moved to Giffgaff and have found it great so far. £10/ month for 200 minutes phone, unlimited texts and 1GB Internet, which I find easily covers me. I use it with an older iPhone I got on eBay. If you've not already ordered I could do for you and would appreciate the credit reward.
 • Thanks, @ShaunG! I checked through the site and it seems the credit scheme doesn't work for nano sims. But I'll definitely need to take you up on that in a few months for a SIM for an older iPhone! :)
• I've been on Giffgaff for over a year and at the price they cannot be beaten (unless you require a human voice for assistance!). They piggy-back on o2.

However, this is another MVNO worth checking out: Ovivo Mobile which offers 100mins/100txts/400MB per month for a one off charge of £10 (used to be £5). They use the Vodafone network and is handy for using in a spare phone.

YMMV :)
