We use a guy who lives round the corner on the Andover Estate, not cheap but very professional. Nice feller, he has become a personal friend. DM me if you want his number.
I've got someone who's been doing all my laptop repairs for years, very good and very affordable. He works in Holborn, otherwise he can collect and drop off the laptop at your home. Message me for his contact details.
I used Marek of ITBox recently and he was brilliant - managed to restore life to the 9yr old laptop I'm using right now. I was preparing its funeral rites! Local and extremely reasonable - http://itboxcs.co.uk/, 07904 607745.

What make is the dead 'puter? These guys knew exactly what the problem with my laptop was as soon as I told them the model (an HP). They're not cheap but it's a pro set-up.

There's a drop-off point on Regent Street if SE London gives you the fear.

my vote is for Supergeek (aka Mike), up beyond Bounds Green - not all that local but cheap, appropriately geeky and knows what he's doing - he has rescued the contents of apparently devastated HDs for me more than once ... If you put it into google the details will come up.

Thank you all for your very helpful recommendations, given that they are round the corner from a mates who I need to visit and I love the name I am going to go with Supergeek.

Will report back.
