I've just started knitting, and have hit a major problem that I can't sort out...would anyone be willing to give me a hand...I'll buy coffee at vagabonds!
There are friendly and helpful knitting / crochet groups at libraries across Haringey, e.g. 1-4pm at Stroud Green & Harringey Libraries on Thursdays and 11am onwards in the cafe at Hornsey Library on Saturdays. I also think you can knit at St Ann's Library on Mondays and Alexandra Park Library on Saturday afternoons. All welcome!
Hello Misscara, Thanks for contacting me!
I'm knitting a scarf, with a twisted drop stitch pattern and I think I've either dropped a stitch, or picked up two together. It's hard to tell because the wool is very fine and fluffy (a mix of mohair and silk).
The pattern is from Rowan, and is called a twisted drop stitch scarf:

Not sure what a DM is? But I'd really appreciate some help - would be great if I had a completed scarf at some point this winter :-)

I would love to join a knitting group. I collect tea pots and in the past a very nice lady used to knit me tea cosy for them as they all varied in size. She used to volunteer at the hospital and I paid her and bought the wool for the tea cosy. Unfortunately sadly she died recently. I recently acquired a wonderful new dutch tea pot from Amsterdam which I desperately need a tea cosy for. I would love to learn how to make one - but I am not very coordinated with my hands and worried I may not have the aptitude to develop the skills to knit, If I can't manage it I am happy to pay someone to kit me a cosy if I show them the design I want and buy the wool.
Miscarra thank you that is very kind. I am not around very much in London until March but maybe after if that suits you. I will pay you in money, food, wine or whatever takes your fancy.

Am sorry to have been patronising before. I understand I have a major issue which I need to vent via other means rather than rant.

It's funny how there is such mystery attached to knitting now it's become 'cool' again. As long as you don't want to do anything complicated it's a very simple skill to learn. We used to teach it to Brownies.
Same with sewing. You can make pretty much anything by following instructions on the pattern to the letter and with a sewing machine that just does a basic running stitch, but people treat it as a mysterious cult. Tailoring and bespoke requires more skill.
Curtains, blinds and cushions are very simple but people get terrified by the amount of fabric involved.
The thing a lot of people don't have is a good sense of colour and pattern and that is impossible to teach. I've seen people knit or sew perfectly well but they give up because they have chosen such horrible combos of wool/fabrics
You tube has some great clips to remind you too. I have just knitted a poncho for my daughter, and the clips are great for casting on and off as I had forgotten!
Great post Miss C! And thanks for the compliment. [shameless plug] http://idoruknits.blogspot.co.uk/ [/shamelessplug]

I go to a group in Walthamstow, every first and third Monday at the Bell, if anyone's ever in the area.
