By popular request after the Hero of SG Awards here is a poll to recognise the best pubs - gold, silver, bronze awards. The elves are going out drinking on tavern check. Points to note in your nominations: - state of the toilets - food range and quality (not related) - entertainment , events etc - TV policy (bugbear of mine) - outdoor facilities - decoration (give type ) - landlord -staff -drinks range -tractate Midooth reading - price of stuff -private hire -was Miscarra in there? - any historical connections -type of clientele - romance factor -pets: observations -Barbra Windsor rating And as a treat to Miscarra you can also nominate a closed pub or bar eg Osborn Tavern, just for the memory. I think the Osborn Tavern was where Nandos is now.  Never went into it.  It was a bit like the Park Tavern.

well, it's years since I was a serious pub goer, but it's a long way down Chang's list before you get to the crucial things about being a pub, as opposed to any other social space. Toilets at no. 1? Entertainments and outdoor facilities ahead of landlord, staff, drinks range? <div><br></div><div>Also, what is 'tractate Midooth reading'?</div><div><br></div><div>Maybe I'm just very dopey ...</div>

A good pub is friendly.  The bar staff and public have manners. <div><br></div><div>Then, comes atmosphere.  Good jukebox (free)  or good music played.  </div><div><br></div><div>Decent beer.  I drink lager or ale. The odd guiness. Not looking for obscure stuff.</div><div><br></div><div>Not crowded.  Spoilt when I live on mainland Europe.  The idea of going into a bar, except if it's a clubby bar and not having a seat is unacceptable. You pay £4 quid a drink.  You should unless it's a club type place....</div><div><br></div><div>No Sports unless it's a sports bar.</div><div><br></div><div>No dodgy pub funk rock.</div><div><br></div><div>Chuggers and beggars banned and run out of the pub.</div><div><br></div><div>Music kept at a constant volume.</div><div><br></div><div>Eccentric bar staff.</div><div><br></div><div><br></div>

Osborne was a bar from the fifth circle of hell. Whelk stall was brilliant, I spent many happy hours there drinking Nigerian Guinness from the off licence next door and chatting to Pat's Friday night crowd. It was like a club, people came from far and wide and you had everybody from headmasters and solicitors to East End gangsters and the bloke from the tyre shop. Brilliant - sad loss.

Though have always gone along  SG rd since a kid , never paid much attention until moving here, can just remember it all was very shabby with some wholesale  dress shops. near  the Tesco end.  Should ask the father in law, they have lived on Mountview  Rd for over 45 yrs, he founded the Socialist bookshop in FP<div><br></div><div>  </div>

The Osborne was a dive, druggy and full of drunks and easily the worst pub in the area. There was no connection between the pub and the whelk stall and the customers were entirely different - it just had a lease on the forecourt. I think Pat was the longest-serving whelk man in north London at one time. When Nando's took over, the lease carried on for a while but eventually Nando's bought him out or the lease just ran out. I think there was some funny business.
