• There are a few things I like in the LibDem manifesto, but what is their obsession with having free 30 min parking? It makes absolutely no sense. When was the last time you saw swathes of empty parking spaces in front of shops? I'll tell you: never. Parking spaces in front of shops are always taken, so clearly paying for parking is not putting people off. If there is an issue it's that there are very few places you are allowed to park at all near shops. I am disabled and have a blue badge so I already can park for free however a lot of the time I have to drive off because I simply can't get a space to park. How about a commitment to make spaces available for those who actually need it rather than encouraging people with two good legs to take to their cars and make an impossible situation worse. Also can't say I'm a fan of the blanket 20mph speed limit proposal. All the roads that need to be 20 already are, which has to be at least 70% of the roads in the borough.

 • There is a wealth of evidence showing accidents and casualties decline where large scale 20mph zones are introduced. I agree some drivers can behave aggressively but firstly these drivers would likely have been aggresive if it had been a 30mph limit and the most important thing about the 20mph zones is embedding changes in behaviour. While when they are first introduced some people may speed over time there is evidence that speeds continue to fall, the other huge plus point is that new transport schemes will be designed for 20mph rather than 30-40mph, this will ebnable over time a huge shift in how our roads are viewed and used. Anyway, I won't go on but I strongly believe things like borough wide 20mph are vital in helping the shift away from cities being focused around cars - roads are for all users (pedestrians, cyclists, bus users, car drivers) and they also make up the majority or 'public space' in London, our neighbourhoods would be much more pleasant spaces if vehicles were going slowe.
• You do attract them don't you! I hope you called the police. I also hope you never have the misfortune to have an accident - I imagine the guilt of not risking your personal safety (safelt encased in a car) at the cost of the safety of more vulnerable users would be substantial.

I've never really been along Wightman Road but the roads I know in Islington are generally fairly well observed in terms of 20mph*.

*very few vehicles actually go 20mph but most seem to go around the 25mph mark and very few go above 30mph - if these roads were marked at 30mph there would be a number of people travelling at 35 mph +
The eagle-eyed among you will have noticed this in the LibDem manifesto:

“We will continue to call for Transport for London to take over the suburban services into Moorgate that are currently run by First Capital Connect, and run an improved London Overground service.”

This isn’t the most important thing in the manifesto, but it’s my favourite.

 • I should add, although I rarely drive when I do I would not go exactly 20 and I can see how someone sticking to exactly 20 would aggravate other drivers - as you say; sad but true. I really hope you reported it to the police though, and definitely do if it happens again. They are really hot on that kind of thing as the people who do things like that will often have previous.
•
Wow, I'd never heard of anyone suffer road rage like that in London let alone it be a regular occasion. Must be horrible. It's a shame being so considerate results in those kind of a reaction.

However, you say crap London suburbs, you haven't been to Bexley, Bromley, Hounslow, Wembley, Edmonton, Redbridge, Dagenham, Barking then? I'm spending half my time in Bexley at the moment and it's dire.

In all seriousness, if you have a mobile phone then give them a ring. 999 can be used for instances of what you describe, I've rang 999 twice and my wife once in the last year and there's been a response within a couple of minutes each time. If you give them a description of the car and number plate all police cars/officers within several miles will be on the look-out and like I said, I'd think there's a strong possibility they will have previous.

 • Better enforcement of the law would generally be a better solution to problems than new laws, but I guess that requires lots of expenditure, and less in the way of high-profile moments for politicians, so never seems to be what we get. Silly, really - imagine the money you'd make if you fined every arsehole who speeds through the red lights at the crossings along SGR (and double if they're on their mobile at the time).

 • Indeed. I am reminded of the campaign to save the Arthur Simpson Library, which I supported but whose other members appalled me when they talked about the site of what's now N4 Library being "a long way, and a different community". It's not like it's the other side of the Pyrenees, people.
 • The Arthur Simpson deal was dodgy. Any one remember how dodgy?
 • Talking about dodgy:

It's easy to become cynical about the claims of different political parties, consummate mud-slingers that they are. So if anyone is in any doubt just how sickeningly incompetent Haringey Labour are then please do have a look at this truly astonishing timeline. Talk about Rotten Boroughs.

http://bit.ly/HaringeyTimeline

;
