Floor sanding

Hi! I'd like to sand the wood floor of my appartement, in not very good condition at the moment. Does anybody here have tips for renting machine or even one to lend/rent? Thanks!

My tip would be to call in a pro to do the job.  You could potentially save a bit of cash by doing the painting/varnishing yourself, once the boards have been prepared, but sanding is messy, difficult work.  The only people I know who elected to do it themselves bitterly regretted it.

I did it myself, with a hired sander - from HSS or somewhere like that. I wouldn't say I regretted it - I thought it wasn't bad if you like a kind of shabby old-fashioned amateurish effect! I was no good at things like filling in cracks, though, and when it came to my daughter's room she demanded modern ikea laminate floors. Laying the laminate was infinitely more annoying than sanding.
