Well, that will teach me to go up and over the hill looking for coffee and cake.

I just paid a whole nine quid for two coffees and a piece of chocolate cake.

I have never been so outraged in all of my life. I thought they could have at least warned me that it was going to be an expensive 20 minutes. If I earned money at that rate I would be rolling in it.

The coffee wasn't particularly good and the cake was rank and sweet.

Anyway, I told them I would never be back - they didn't seem too bothered.

For Coffee and Cake that side of the hill, I'd recommend Coffee Cake on Tottenham Lane. Quite reasonable for take outs, particularly pain aux raisans.

I'd second Giles' recommendation - Coffee Cake is great. Definitely 'inspired' by Ottelenghi but not quite as expensive. Mmmm.

Liz, I initially misread your post and thought it said 'Coffee cake is on Giles.' I was looking forward to it, coffee cake is my favourite.

Oooh no - my favourite is Le Sable d'Or for a cafe au lait and a raspberry brioche. Every time. I agree the Italian food hall is diabolical. They charge £9 for a for a breakfast!

I know someone who had some leek and potato soup in le sable d'or and it had a hair in it! They don't seem that put off mind.

You can never get a table in there, though. But the pastries are delicious.
