Tesco are applying for planning permission to re-develop the current site and use the upper floors for sales space. Not sure if they will convert to a Tesco extra.
Ali, you probably appreciate this already but that's the Site Allocations plan which shows where the Council thinks redevelopment should happen. I can't find an actual planning application for the site, but maybe it just isn't up on the website yet.
The loss of this store will have a big impact on many people who use the store and those who work there. The availability of a good selection of grocery items close to so many has been a boon during the lock down.
The building is ugly. The upper floors will not be used with any great intensity. There is room for massing, adding additional floors and space for massing at the rear. This could all be done whilst retaining a ground floor retail unit.
Hard agree with Grenners. Gentle densification could retain existing function, add more, and vastly improve the streetscape all at the same time. It needs to be carefully done though. It's an absolutely critical site for restoring a grim bit squeezed between three conservation areas. A fantastic opportunity that could go badly wrong if mishandled.
I agree with @Grenners (What happened to Sweep?)The building is ugly (just like what they did to the west side of Crouch End Broadway, but not as bad a Sainsbury, Camden Town). Like so many parts of “modern” London, significant improvements could be made by a return tour of the Luftwaffe. Still, Tesco SGR would be a pretty low priority.
Some years back I found online a photograph of a United Dairies unit on what is now the Tesco site [presumably the 'new' dairy?]. Does anyone have info on this, or a photograph to share? Nothing immediately found on Collage [https://collage.cityoflondon.gov.uk/]
It seems like there may have been a milk dock at Finsbury Park Station at which the milk would arrive in London in glass lined tanks from the country side. It may have also travelled up the Northern heights railway up to a United Dairies depot at Finchley. Lots of discusion about it here along with stuff about Finsbury Park Station which might whet the appetite of Railway Archaeologists
