Dear friends of the Ancient Corporation - great news! We now have a confirmed date for the revival & 250th anniversary *charity* re-election of the 'Mayor of Stroud Green' at the Stapleton Tavern: 22nd July 2023
On July 26th 1773, Thomas Legg was elected 'Mayor of Stroud Green' at the Stapleton Tavern, Hornsey, in a colourful, boozy and eccentric ceremony. . He left behind a beautiful engraved jewel, now a museum piece. Join us this year as we once again revive the 'Ancient Corporation of Stroud Green' & recreate the election on the 250th anniversary, in the pub where it took place.
To make this happen we will need ideas, support, expertise and above all, enthusiasm. Let's make it *fun* and a great local charity event. To get involved, please follow, comment or DM here, or visit

I will now be looking for an amateur choir/singers to sing a genuine eighteenth century drinking song, MC or stand-up host, social media expertise, a little finance . Any suggestions?
The true story of the Ancient Corporation of Stroud Green 1750-1780 and the real identity of the 1773 'Mayor of Stroud Green' will be revealed (by me) next month in the Hornsey Historical Society spring Bulletin and thereafter by London Historians newsletter and anyone else who wants it. Keep up at the back!
