Style Opticians

Whilst out walking Thursday afternoon, I remembered to pop into Style Opticians (between Pappagone and the Locksmiths) to have an eye test. There wasn't a queue so they fitted me in straight away. I've been going there since 2002 and their testing routine has varied a lot in quality. Today, however, it was spot on. They have one of those new machines that can pretty much get your eye prescription spot on, leaving the optician to fine tune to personal taste. Got myself some contact lenses, so I can wear some proper shades this summer. And they're fitting new lenses in my specs, I have to go back later today for 15 minutes for them to do it. £15 for the eye test and great value new lenses. They have a great choice of frames and can order in anything you want. Very highly recommended.

Yep, my last test was at Style Opticians. Very good value. The guy testing out back was a bit odd but friendly enough, I like the couple who run the shop.

I just wanted to comment on a very positive experience i had with Style Opticians last week. I've used them before but last week, i was seriously impressed.

I had an appointment for an eye test on Thursday afternoon at 4.30pm. I needed some new glasses and ordered some. The optician told me he'd try to get them in for Saturday but i explained that i was going away for the weekend the following day and wouldnt be able to pick them up for a week. He got straight on the phone to the company who sold the lenses and asked if they could get the ones i needed the following morning. I thanked him but said i needed to leave for 11am and he said he'd do his best to get them for me in time - the next day.

At 10.30am on Friday morning he called me to say he was hand delivering my new glasess so i'd have them before i went away. To be fair, i live literally round the corner but even so, i was really impressed!

Take that for service, specsavers!

Dearie me, I've worn very strong glasses since I was six and am a contact lens wearer now, but clearly I am still blind as a bat as I have honestly never noticed an optician on SGR!

My prescription is quite complicated and very strong. My last pair cost £170 per lens plus the cost of frames five years ago!

Sorry to interject an off-key note here, but a couple of years ago I ordered a new pair of glasses from Style Opticians, and they weren't properly assembled. I think the optician cropped the lens too small when he put it in the frame. I should have made an issue out of it but I didn't have the heart, as he is indeed a nice man and I didn't want to give him a hard time. About six months later they fell apart and I had to get a new pair.

Now I go to Lims in Crouch End. Absolutely brilliant, but a lot pricier.

Moral: dunno really.

I was just about to start a thread about recommendations for opticians but did the search first and found this :-)

Do Style do contact lenses via the post? I currently get those ones from Specsavers which saves me going in all the time.

I had a bad experience in Crouch End Specsavers at the weekend. There was a very heavy upsell about trying to get me to buy more expensive contact lenses. I wouldn't mind if I needed them but at the point of the up-selling they hadn't even done the contact lens check yet to find out if my current ones were ok or not! They were quite pushy about it too

Also they tried to overcharge me, but that might have been an accident to be fair. Just topped off a bad experience.

I do my lenses through Boots Opticians (d&a as was) in Muswell Hill. I have worn glasses since I was a very small child so have a lot of experience of eye tests and opticians. I can honestly say I have never found a better optician than the lady there. She is possibly German or Scandi and is incredibly thorough and great at explaining everything to do with the various procedures. My prescription is not complicated but is very strong and Specsavers aren't able to do it. Not that I'd trust them to do it anyway, I think of them more as a place for people who just need reading glasses.

Another vote against the awful people at the Holloway Specsavers. They must be on commission. They 'upsold' me the wrong contacts, which I didn't figure out until a week later, when I was in Thai monastery. Had to wear my glasses for a month because the contacts didn't fit properly. When I came back and complained, they acted like it was my fault that I believed the woman who sold them to me.

I think Specsavers must be on commission. Never been to Holloway Rd (luckily by the sounds of it!) but I had a similar wrong prescription at Tottenham Court Road branch. They wouldn't believe me about it, even though I couldn't see properly. Idiots.

When they finally admitted they'd been sending the wrong lenses they refused to refund or replace them. Worth knowing though that you can claim money back via your bank using the direct debit guarantee.

Anyway, I shall now delete Specsavers (all branches) from my life

It seems like I have to do my eye test all over again. The lady who did my test warn me that it may take up to 4 weeks to get use to them (REALLY????)
I have worn glasses since I was 4 and it never takes that long to get use to new glasses. I am a bit worried if they really know what they doing over there. I may just have to see another specialist just to be sure.

I use Boots in Muswell Hill too, and agree that the lady there is very helpful and seems extremely knowledgeable. I've had all sorts of problems with my eyes and have had lens replacement surgery in one eye and she immediately knew what I was talking about (which other opticians in the past haven't). I've had bad experiences with Specsavers too - I just don't think they train their staff adequately.

I have worn glasses from infancy and I have been going to Dr Lim, by clocktower in Crouch End, for at least 30 years and am very happy with his care of my eyesight and his personal interest in his patients.
