Bike Repair?

edited June 2008 in Local discussion
I know this has been touched on before but I was wondering what the best places are in SG to get my bike repaired (preferably free but otherwise charging).

My newish bike's front wheel's disk braking has completely stopped working. I've never had disk braking before so no clue how to fix it.

There's no such thing as a free bike repair!

Two Wheels Good on Crouch Hill will sort you out for a small fee.

For a small charge Finsbury Park cycles on Seven Sisters Road (in between Durham and Fonthill Roads) will sort you out, or 2 Wheels Good in Crouch End if you can be bothered to push it up the hill.

There is a free place by Elthorne Park where they have cycle surgery on Sat or Sun, it's been talked about here before, if I find the discussion I'll add it to this comment.

There are a couple of threads on here too about free bike advice places in FP (actual park) and sunnyside park (or whatever it's actually called) near Archway. Also, if you look on the Haringey council website they have a list of weekends when the "bike man" is available, and where, for advice. I don't know if they'll carry out serious repairs, but they may well show you how to fix something if they know how to do it.

    Thanks All

I rang Haringey Council and there is a 4 hour Dr Bike Session 8.30am - 12.30 on Wednesday 18th June in Finsbury Park.

On Saturdays, around noon, there are usually a couple people doing free bike checkups in the park, right by the Oxford Rd entrance. I'm not sure if it's the same people as James mentioned. I've never seen them there that early.

What is wrong with rewarding a bike mechanic ie pay to fix the bike ?

They have to earn a living as well as anyone else ! (Although I guess they don’t get hit by petrol prices)

I find the staff in 2wheelsG to be very snobby and macho about the mundane task of bike repair.
My partner hates it so much that she takes her bike down to Seven Sisters Road instead.

I defy any snobby macho cycle repairer to be more snobby and macho than the guys in Condor on Grays Inn Road. The place is truly terrifying.

@David and Jeremy - totally right on both counts. One guy in 2wheelsG was so patronising I had to walk out half way through (he was talking to my other half about something) as I couldn't stand it anymore. And the guys at Condor look at you as if you have dirt on your shoes if you as much as dare to bring in a bike that isn't their own brand. They turned their noses up at my other half's carbon racer because it wasn't Condor, then did a really shit job of servicing it too, so much so that he had to take it back and demand that they do it all over again.
    I like Evans.

Want you bike fixed then I recommend Jonathon.

He is the guy who is bike doctor at the Sunnyside Saturday Vegi market but I am not sure which Saturdays.#

He also does a Home Service for bikes:

Either at home or workplace anywhere in Hackney and Islington and he does Stroud Green.

    £5 callout and £2.50 / 15 minutes and parts

    call 7946 261 165 Jonathon

He came around to our place, put new spokes in the back wheel, balanced it put it all back together, realigned the brakes and unkinked the chain all for £10 inc the call out. He arrives by bike has a trailer and can fix most things and is a really nice guy !

    Can’t say fairer than that!

That's an excellent service. Will remember that. Pedro (long absent SGR member) would concur on the bad service at Condor, screwed up his wheel and replaced with an inferior brand. Makes the attitude there all the more annoying.

@Ali: that sounds brilliant - excellent tip.
