Turning Negatives into Digital Photos

edited July 2008 in General chat
Not really SG related but wondering if someone might be able to help...

I've got loads and loads of photo negatives which I'd love to turn into digital photos (jpegs or the like).

I was wondering what the cheapest and most practical way to do this is?

I can tell you what not to do. Do not, under any circumstances, take the negatives to the printing place by the tube. I think it may be call Blackstock Print, or something like that, though it's actually by Wells Terrace.

I took in several rolls of b&w negs last year to get them scanned. It's around £4/roll. I actually have a negative scanner, but it's painfully slow, and I'm impatient. They promised to do it in 48 hours. In the end, it took over 2 weeks and they managed to scratch the negatives. Oh, and they still charged me full price for it.

Depending on how many rolls you want to scan, you can either take them to a decent (and more expensive) photo place like Snappy Snaps, or you could buy your very own scanner on Ebay. They're very reasonably priced because no one but me shoots on film anymore.

If you do go the Snappy Snaps route, shop around. They all charge a different amount. The Westminster one is almost 30% cheaper than the Soho ones. The Holloway one is a complete rip-off.

There's a scanner for £79.99 over there. Oh, and one for £67.30
