Looking for help My lap top DVD Writer is broken and needs replacing. Does any on know if these are standard items or are they specialist to each Machine. I have a Fujitso Amillo L which has a Phillips SDVD8431 in it so am looking for something compatible to that. I think changing it is probably in my skill set or does any one know if any of the Laptop Repair shops around her are okay and how much they might charge for this ?

Let me know how you get on Ali, since I have the same problem.

In this case my laptop mfr has informed me that there is nothing wrong with the DVD player/writer and it's a 'software problem'. I.e. some problem with the laptop registry. I am going to upgrade to Windows 7 and see if that solves it fi.

Might be worth checking that out.

A friend who repairs desktops says that the laptop guys he uses are at least £30 per hour. Luckily our latest laptop problem was solved by a £16 adapter rather than having to go that route. I have voided the warranty by opening up a laptop and installing some memory. There were step by step instructions/photos on the web on how to do it. Have you googled this possibility? Another solution is an external DVD. I got netbook one for around £20 on Amazon (after shopping around on DABS, ebuyer and eBay). It's compact and packs easily for travel.
  • Our Toshiba laptop won't charge. Again. It's not the adapter. It's not the battery. It's the plug where you plug in the adapter. At least I think it is, but I don't really know anything about these things. Can anyone recommend a place/person who'll give us a free estimate? I've called a couple Toshiba repair places. They want £45+ just to give an estimate. The official Toshiba repair centre is somewhere in mainland Europe now, so they want £80 in postage, and that's before they do anything. I'm still hoping that Toshiba will do the right thing and repair it free of charge, but in case they don't, I'd like to know how much it would cost to fix it out of warranty. Any recommendations would be most appreciated.

Krappy You should eliminate your DVD drivers before doing anything they may be out of date or corrupt. If you go to device manager you can check the make of DVD writer. Do this by either typing in devmgmt.msc into the start run box or getting to it via control panel. Once you have it up expand the folder for DVD writer and you should be able to see what make it is. Then Google it with say name of the writer and driver update. This will probably bring up a load of forums where you will find other people who have had the same problem. You could also try and put the Utilities and Drivers CD that you would hve got with the machine (providing you can read CDs I can) This will probably do an auto update of all out of date drivers on you machine. I think I will probably go for the £20 solution as I can use it one more than more machine
