Hello SG.orgites Can anyone suggest a good chinese/oriental supermarket either in the SG locality or around Angel? Thanks JFJ

I and Mrs, TB have a penchant for Hoo Hing off the North Circular. They have a Dim Sum canteen upstairs and all the Chines/Korean/ everything else you should want down stairs. Great trip and you can pop in to Brent Cross for a bit of bourgois shopping therapy after. Bliss. also very cheap!

Used to be one on bottom end of Hornsey Rd.

It's still there. Next door to The Eaglet pub. Small, but perfectly formed.

I went there once about six years ago, when an ex moved in just along the road from it. It was pretty grotty and we never returned, but it seemed to be doing reasonable business.

There's one on Seven Sisters Road, about half way between FP and Holloway Rd, approximately opposite Peacocks. It looks quite big from the outside. We usually drive up to the Wing Yip in Cricklewood. A wonderous place.
• Wicked. Thanks guys, will check out the hornsey rd one. I knew I could rely on my well informed neighbours..
• There is also a good chinese stall in the indoor market area of the shopping center in Wood Green. It sells all the frozen dim sum, prawns and all the sauces etc you will need - also a couple of fish mongers , veg stalls and butchers in there so you can get everything in one hit and there is loads of parking.

I went in the Eaglet once on the way back from the cinema. I asked for a gin & tonic, and it was one of those comedy/fearful moments when the whole bar went silent, music stuttered, glasses smashed, everyone stared… horrible. When I first moved to London and old Irish fellah told me that the pub was originally owned by a French Bonapartist, hence the anglicised version of ‘L’Aiglon’, but it didn’t sound all that likely to me.

Blimey, The Eaglet. There's an unpleasent place.

About 18 years ago I moved back to London (bottom of Finsbury Park Road) after a 3 year stint living in Paris. An Irish friend, Aoife, follwed me over about 3 months later.

She was kipping on our sofa whilst looking for work in London. She took the first job she could find, which was as live in bar staff at The Eaglet.

Now, she was used to rough old boozers at home, but felt dead uncomfortable (being an attractive 20 something woman) within this community of piss head Irish navvies.

I visited her in there a few times and regretted it. She was back on our sofa soon enough. Then we both skipped back to Paris for more Gallic delights!

Hang on... you had a painting commissioned? I mean, I agree it's that funny, but...

Beaglet is very funny indeed. I've never been in there. Wasn't it a horrific looking club called the Night Owl for a bit? Or maybe that was just a night club part of it. The whole place makes me shudder though so I never felt the need to investigate.

Chinese supermarket on Seven Sisters was pretty good when I went in there for Vietnamese rice wrappers a while back.
