Babysitting circle

Hi, I'm Maria. Looking for a babysitting circle or something similar in the area. My daughter is 12 and I occasionally need to pop out in the evening for an hour or two. Are there any people on here with school age kids? And do you have a group for socialising (going to pubs, gigs etc)?

No circle I'm aware of, but I'd be interested in hearing of one, or setting one up.

We've two kids smaller than yours and in the Lancaster Rd area. Would that suit you geographically?

I don't know whether it's possible now, but it'd be an idea to edit the name of this thread so it reads something more like 'Babysitting circle?' or similar!
• Hi and thanks for the reply. I am in Stapleton Hall Road so just round the corner from you. How old are your kids? Let me see if I can edit the title...
  •
I'm likely to be interested too, though not quite yet.

We'd need to think through the monetary implications: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Capitol_Hill_Babysitting_Co-op
;
And with that I win the prize for 'most irrelevantly geeky comment ever made on stroudgreen.org'. Go me.

  • @mirandola - if we are putting together an irrelevantly geeky top 5, I'm not sure this one would make the grade :)
  • Really? What's the top 5 then.

One has just started on Ossian, most of the families already know each other from school, so in theory it should work well for them. We only know the other families to say hello to, so I'm not sure how happy they will be to have 'strangers' like us in their homes looking after their children. I know we wouldn't have anyone look after our children unless we knew them very well.
  • Hi Maz,

We've one child in reception and one in nursery.

The Capitol Hill thing is fascinating - in days gone by I was babysat by a circle administered a bit like that (though much more simply).

The 'paradox of thrift' sounds a bit like the title of the seventh Star Wars film.

Any other takers?
• We have a 15 year old looking for the occasional babysitting work (for money, not circle) in case anyone is looking for that. She's very sensible and mature.
  • Thanks for all the replies (or is it replys?). I'll have a look at that Capitol Hill website. Shaun, how much does your daughter charge per hour? Mine is 12 already so she shouldn't be too much hard work.

  • Maz - I've sent you a personal message, you see it by clicking on "inbox".
  • ok. thanks Shaun. That Capitol Hill idea seems a bit too complicated for my pea-sized brain but thanks for the suggestion anyway. And it's nice to know there are local people interested in the idea. RedSturgeon, how would you organise a simplified version of Capitol Hill?
  • Shaun, I haven't received any personal messages.
  • If anyone needs a great local babysitter then let me know, thanks. Im a nanny in the local area, mount view rd.
• Great. Thanks. Please could you send me your details in a private message? Maria

They aren't. Cick on 'inbox' in the top menu. Click on "start a new conversation". Write the name as if it were an email. Send it. OR Click on a name. Left hand box "send X a message". Click that. In both cases, that's a private message. It's private. We can't even see it from the admin side of the system. If you get an email saying you've got a private message, click on it and respond in the system. The same as Facebook. Don't respond directly to the email. YOU CAN ALSO click on someone's 'wall' and write on that. That's not private. Don't do that if you want it to be private.

Oh. Didn't get the "wall" thing. The mobile site doesn't seem to offer the "send message" option, but I get it now.
