Book group 11th Jan at 8pm in the White Lion: Silas Marner by George Eliot

The next Stroud Green Book Group meeting will be on Wednesday 11th January at 8pm. We will meet in The White Lion, Stroud Green Road (next-ish to Pappagones). The book is *Silas Marner by George Eliot*. A fun festive holiday read! Maybe... Written in 1861, it is so ancient that it is FREE in ebook form, and dead cheap in real-life form: https://wordery.com/search?term=silas+marner Here's an article by John Mullan if you want to swot up/show off: https://www.bl.uk/romantics-and-victorians/articles/an-introduction-to-silas-marner-fairytale-realism-and-labour (I haven't read it because I fear spoilers!) You can see the manuscript at the British Museum. Newbies/returners are always welcome. We usually sit at the back of the pub, or just ask at the bar for book group. In the meantime happy Christmas one and all! P.S. February will mark seven years of Stroud Green Book Group! We started with Untouchable by Mulk Raj Anand. Maybe on the 10th anniversary we should just start again from the beginning...

  • Looking forward to book group next week - my copy of the book has lots of helpful notes on interpretation. It's a surprisingly short book, if you start today I reckon you'll manage to finish it by Wednesday!
