Stroud Green Fruit & Veg
  • Hi everyone,

i thought i would start a new thread for the shop as people are always asking for things and inboxing me.

I must say thanks again to everyone uses the shop, especially my regular customers.

If anyone does need anything or has any questions please post on here and i will reply asap.

As for chris who came in this morning, we actually have monkey nuts (peanuts) in the shop. Sorry about the confusion.

And those who are after rhubarb, i will have some in the next couple days. It is in fact forced rhubarb this time of year. Outdoor rhubarb should be availble april.

    Ash

  • @ashman, do you stock Fairtrade bananas? I need some over-ripe ones today or tomorrow!

  • del monte does fairtrade but im always dissapointed with their product so I stock chiquita bananas which are a lot better. Chuquita works with the rainforest alliance. Fairtrade and the rainforest alliance are both very similar schemes, you will find a lot of posts online with people arguing about which is better. They are pretty much the same, i couldnt tell you the difference as they both protect the farmers and labourers, and protect the enviroment.

The funny thing is they uually both buy from the same plantations and are the biggest rivals in banana wars.

  • I would appreciate "Ashmans Monthly Memo", a special vegetable bulletin designed to tell me whats in season and what potential meals i can cook with it. Every month we'd know what was best to eat and perhaps learn something new in the kitchen too. Fancy doing one for March?

  • That is a brilliant idea!

  • Ye i could do that. The only thing is i know whats in season in the uk, but im not a very good cook and everything i eat is literally turkish food. Im not a great cook and im very choosey so i dont even try anything new :) i wouldnt trust my advice on what to do with your veg.

  • OK, well saying whats in season is the most useful info really. Im sure people on here can make suggestions on how to cook stuff.

I am a MASSIVE fan of turkish food, so suggest away on that front.

  • Ye i guess this would be a good post for cooking tips aswell?

I could definetely get the best cook (my mum :) ) to give some tips on turkish food, i coould pass it on to you guys. Like how to use pepper and tomatoe paste, which a majority of the greatest meals use.

A recipe for dolma? Which is stuffed aubergines and peppers? Spinach fried with eggs? Pasta with pepper paste and tomatoes? There are so many things. Ill try to do one a month?

  • The W.I. would be delighted to suggest tips on how to use your produce in cakes, pies, puddings, jams, jellies and chutneys. I'd love to hear about other people's recipes too.

  • You could do a Blue Peter version of one of these:

  • perhaps Seasons chef could join in with the recipes for veg :}

  • I like the sound of this place, where is it?

  • I think you should also post a UK ASPARAGUS warning, because they have a season of about 25 minutes.

  • Just wanted to say that I bloody love you. It's so rare to get a proper greengrocer in London and you've got a really great range of stuff. It's great that you're open so late in the evenings too. And all the staff are really nice. So... thanks.

  • Thanks from me too. I still get most of my fruit and veg from Abel & Cole because I'm lazy and they deliver but would be delighted to swap if  you did delivery.

  • Don't be lazy. Get a bike. Chang

  • I've got a bike. I'm still lazy.

  • Uk asparagus should be available around april.

  • @odd stewart

If it's the place I'm thinking of, it's between World's End and Nando's on the left-hand side as you come up SGR from FP station, just after all the wholesale Halal butchers'.

I heard someone talking to their friend the other night saying "oh yeah, it's the best shop in the world". Since I was just on my way out of this brilliant greengrocer's, I felt like having a big fat grin. And so I did.

  • Thanks.

    I shall be dropping in.

  • It's very easy to find - it sports a sign saying Stroud Green Fruit & Veg

  • I cut and pasted from the title of this thread and it went enormous!

  • I'm counting down to the start of the asparagus season, I absolutely love it.  The thing with asparagus though is that it deteriorates really quickly and as you mentioned the season is only about 6 weeks.  Every year we go here to the Vale of Evesham Asparagus festival - it's well worth the trip.

  • @ashman, have you still got blood oranges in stock? Ta.

  • @vetski i saw lots in there at 10.30 this morning

  • @sophie, lovely, thanks a lot!

  • Hi @ashman - niche request I realise but where they're in season, what would be the chance of you getting courgette flowers in as well as the courgettes themselves? They're delicious!

  • Good Lord, English asparagus (polytunnel grown) is already available in M&S and Selfridges. @ashman, we are awaiting your first delivery!

  • Hi guys,

i have been away on honeymoon, i just got bck . I will look into the asparagus straight away.

  • Congratulations to you!
