WB Yeats pub - ultimate gentrification?

So ...Miscarra's fave knock out joint 'Red Rita's' , once my fave sports bar -da Fonthill -is now to be reborn under the cheeky manager as the 'WB Yeats' pub - 'a gentleman's inn (ladies welcome)'. Sounds good and classy , maybe like Highgate - gold standard for pubs/inns. You will also see the chained sign for the pub just out on Wells Terrace (or do I mean Morris Place) - this is very good publicity and will get commuters in there for a crafty pint. This gentrification of that pub looks like a turn for the better in skid row, but it's a pity the dance floor downstairs has been axed (not Irish enough ?). The manager there was nominated by some in the recent Hero poll so Jonty snd me wish him well. (He did wonders for the Railway, which is oddly still a building site - maybe it went bust??). But please get an inn sign it will make it cooler for the trendies. Perfect for the next social !! Chang

There is never anyone in there. It's funny they put a sign up near park theatre pointing you In the direction of the pub.

It's really busy on Quiz Night and football days but the punters are completely different, more civilised and less rowdy. That sign is peculiar. Also, when it first appeared it had Yeats as Yates.

Ah I wondered what the sign was! Yes gentrification is complete, 20 years ago in this area it would have been flung over a fence! 1st pub I went into was the then George Robey & had to step over some bloke passed out flat on the floor sleeping it off (no one batted an eye), it was an eye opener coming from the dull suburbs

The Robey stoped being the Robey about 1994, then the mean Fiddler took over and changed into one of their venues.  Didn't last long.  When The Robey was kicking it was good. It's sad to think there are no rock venues here now. The Rainbow in the 70s and the Robey in the 80s , early 90s.  It's gone.  Went to many a good gig at The Robey.  <div><br></div><div>Now it's all 'Slow rub' and all that poncy food culture crap.</div>

@kittygal Filthy McNasty's, down the road from Angel, was like that even a couple of years ago. The bloke in the floor would probably have bern Shane McGowan there<div><br></div><div>I went to see Pulp at the Forum in 1994, second best gig ever, after Queen. The Dublin Castle was also an excellent venue then. I lived in the middle of Camden then and there were so many great gigs within walking distance.</div>

Some may say about The Blackstock 'Abonden all hope who enter here'.  I won't mention names.  I say people should 'Abandon all hope who enter Finsbury Park if The Blackstock is gentrified'.  <div><br></div><div>Shane MacGowan used to live on Blackstock Road before gravitating down towards Amwell Road.  He's now in Sandycove in Dublin. He's done alright for himself as he should.</div>

Shane Macgowan can normally be found at the Boogaloo these days, which isn't far. He hasn't changed much.<div><br></div><div>Does the Silver Bullet not still have bands on? I've seen a few there, and across the park the Finsbury is getting back into the gig field in a big way. Not a bad venue, either, though the stage is bizarrely high for the size of the place. <div><br></div><div>There was a brief spell a few years back when Red Rita was ace - quiet and very cheap, making it our default pub for a summer or so. But it didn't last.</div></div>

I forgot about those over priced Finsbury Park concerts.  But Bowie, Roxy, T Rex, The Ramones  at the Rainbow compared to the bloody lad rock of idiotic Stone Roses...No future.<div><br></div><div>World's End is full of jazz rock dodgy low rate fusion bands.  Never seen a good band there.  I'm sure there've been some.</div>

Never been, Miscara, but heard good things about The Finsbury.  Was invited a few times to an open mike night.  It's all happening the other side of the park now?

Bob Mazzer's work is fabulous. Lots of posts featuring his photos on the excellent Spitalfields Life blog - which I heartily recommend to anyone remotely interested in the people and history of our city. They are definitely original photos from the period.

@Arkady 'Banging on' is a bit rich from someone who has been known to wax lyrical about trains and planning applications at quite some length! I would put a winky face here but can't bring myself to use those things.

I think number 20 is an old Victoria Line train. The tube map at the back looks to have DLR on it, when was that brought in? The advert on the right might be Vitamin Water, not sure how long that's been around?<div><br></div><div><br></div><div>It must be Friday, a bit of detective work is more interesting than work!</div>
