Just seen three old Routemasters on their way down Piccadilly. Not the same model as those the run on the Heritage routes. Apparently they were on a run out from Shoreditch through town for Year of the Bus celebrations.
I went to sleep before Hitchin, both ways!
Cycled behind a lovely RT bus running the 38 route today. I had a chat with the conductor when we stopped at traffic lights and he told me that the bus was 73 years old, which means it would have been the model my nan (and coincidentally Detritus' s granny) worked on as a clippie in the war. Lovely to to see it out for a run.
Thought I'd bring this back to the top of the forum as the Finsbury Park event starts tomorrow. <div><br></div><div>There's a bit more information <a href="http://www.routemaster.org.uk/diamondjubilee-news">here</a>, the bus parades are at 2pm on Saturday and 12 and 2pm on Sunday.</div><div><br></div><div>Am very much looking forward to this (and the look on my toddler's face when he sees all those buses).<br><div><br></div><div><br></div></div>
This was superb today. I took so many photos of all the busses. One of the greatest days of my life. I also managed to buy a bus stop. I have always wanted one. I just need to decide where it will go on my flat.
This was an absolute exemplar of the sort of event we ought to have in the park - impressive, yet didn't take half the area out of commission for two weeks and wreck the grass. Friendly, welcoming to all, not ludicrously expensive, and basically brilliant. I also saw one of the buses on Hornsey Rise today, and what a joy to see them back on the streets.
I went back on Sunday again. It was so well organised and it was good to see people of all generations enjoying the busses. I agree with AGDS, I would welcome more free events like this. I met so many bus enthusiasts and we discussed our favourite routes and models. The highlight was the free route master ride from manor house. The bus had the old musty smell that took me back to a child, it wasn't the same without the smell of my dads rothman fags. I bought many things and nearly bought a old bus seat but I have no more storage in my flat. A truly memorable weekend. Thank you so much to the organisers hard work it was really appreciated.
I seem to remember the 236 continuing on up Stroud Green Rd, and finishing at Fiveways, which was useful. Don't know why they cut it short. As a single-decker, there was no problem with the bridge.
Sutent, It was something to do with London Transport and when Hornsey fell out of Middlesex and into Greater London. Everything changed...and nothing for the better! Checkski, the 236 was a godsend on Sundays if you were playing football at Hackney Marshes. The bus used finish in Leytonstone I'm sure. The other great transport was the Crouch Hill Line, this ran from Hampstead to Barking. Even better in Summer they used to run special trains to Westcliff-on-sea so that those of us who's parents could not afford a day at the seaside could go. The trains were always packed and along the same line as above if you were playing football at Wanstead Flats the quickest way to get there and back.
