I hate this thread. Every time i read it i think "i want a curry". We had a Bengal Spice delivery the other day - very disappointing I'm afraid. Quite bland, heavy and got some of the order wrong. It was a weekend, so you can give a discount for a busy night, but all the same...

Well, after getting no answer from Mela I went with Bengal Spice (my local Bengal King is closed on a Tuesday and I was going try that so that I complete the area). I ordered Lamb Dansak and it was really quite good. Order was spot on, lamb was tender, food was still hot - so no qualms. I guess these things come down to the dish and personal preference after all? I went to see the [Lee Miller exhibition at the V&A](http://www.vam.ac.uk/vastatic/microsites/1631_lee_miller/) and I'm sure one of her photos references El Whatever?

New curry house Spice Zone due to open soon next to the entrance to Paradise Walk. I'll give it a go.

Rather you than me. I think we'll be sticking to the Indian Ocean on Holloway Road.

How narrow minded and/or short sighted. :( How do you not know this new place isn't run by the same people? or perhaps even a new startup by the chef from the Indian Ocean? I'm always up for trying something new. You should try The Taste of Nawab on Colney Hatch Lane (Muswell Hill). Everybody owes it to themselves to do so!

    It looks ropey. That's all.

However, I can report that The Tiffin Tin delivers fantastic food. There are two branches, one in Tuffers and another on High Street, Hornsey. Be warned though, the last time we ordered the delivery time was nearly two hours. Well worth the wait, mind.

@Poxy Sunday night curry this week was from TIffin Tin on your recommendation. Very pleasant indeed. Kebab starter was particularly good.

How weird. We got a curry from Tiffin Tin last night based on Poxy's recommendation too. Very good indeed, Petra's prawns and spinach were fantastic. Definitely a good alternative to Jai Krishna when you're too lazy to leave the house or craving something non-veggie.

We nearly had Tiffin Tin last night too! But then instead decided to go all the way to Lavender Hill for a pizza. Yes. Really. Insane.

Poxy, I don't think you should judge a book by it's cover. The Mezbaan also looks dodgy but does a curprisingly good curry and stuff. Anyway, I'll get down off my high horse tonight and try the Tiffin Tin! Colette: typo on [their website](http://thetiffintin.com) - Hornesy edit: ordered, should be 45 minutes, will report back. Hornsey branch told me to call the Tuffnell park branch given that my postcode is N19 (I know!) and their delivery zones overlap there.

it's arrived and my last post is dated 44 minutes ago! Result

It was a pretty good curry. Roti was excellent. All very well packaged.

I just called Tiffin Tin and they quoted me 1h 15mns wait time. Back to good ol' Jai Krishna it is then. That'll teach me to be tempted to stray.
  • edited April 2008
I reckon, and its only my reckon like, Jai Krishna is better for strictly veggie. Tiffin's role is to fill the void around here for similarly decent meat dishes.

Yeah, I'm sure you're right, but only one of us is veggie. I was after a nice bit of lamb curry.... sigh... but I'm way too hungry to wait that long. Never mind.

Odd, that. I don't think Mezbaan looks dodgy at all. I kinda like the 'all our goods on display' approach. I've had some very good food from Mezbaan.

I agree, it looks less dodgy since the refit. :)

The Spice Zone may look a bit dodgy and the name is a bit tacky BUT the food is fantastic. The staff are super friendly and efficient. Lots of interesting fish dishes. Nice big servings. Highly recomended- but only as a take-away. The staff can be a bit too efficient and they have a large TV tuned to a Bhangladeshi station.

Can someone put the Spice Zone on the Directory to help those of us who don't know where it is (that'd be me, then)? Thanks!
  • edited 5:55AM
I've added it, with as much information from their flyer as possible. Though they do get their own location wrong on their map, so I've added it in the correct place.

Thanks Matt. Andy/David, can Matt be the new honorary guardian of the directory? He's good!

I'm afraid that's a responsibility I do not want! Thanks for the offer, though

And yet NO ONE has mentioned Jashan on Turnpike Lane.

They do the best curries in North London. Go. I know it's probably a bit further than just down your road.

I'm new on this site, by the way. Hello

Jashan is getting a huge 9.5 on london eating...! <http://www.london-eating.co.uk/5880.htm>; welcome agaton - good recommendation

Had a takeaway from Spice Zone last week and it was very good ( meat slightly tough - no bad thing in a curry - and good spices ) and the staff were friendly. It took longer than they said, but they kept apologising and gave me a couple of poppadoms - so the opposite of andy's experience in Woody's - customer service counts for a lot in my book.

Remember going to Jashan 15 years ago - it was excellent then too.

    Mezbaan is great for lunch.

We our first Indian Ocean curry last night. A huge thanks to everyone who recommended it. It was delicious! The service was a bit slow, though. Actually, very slow. And it wasn't even busy. Next time we'll get takeaway.

Picked up a takeaway from Jashan yesterday evening. Got it home only to find they'd put in two rice with my side and no main course. Took it back, all cold by now of course. They offered to do it all again, and asked if I wanted a free beer but I refused as I wanted to wait by the car to fend of any traffic wardens, who were preying on the daytime only pay and display bays in the area. Anyway, it was soon ready. Expected the free beer but instead they gave me an extra rice and an extra side. Far too much food for me, but I was glad to get out of there. Got it home and it was all piping hot, but it was obvious from inspection - due to disturbance in the rice and side I'd made whilst tasting - that the original dishes had just been microwaved. Still, the food was good and the menu is really nice

Mmmm - we went to Rasa last week, and had the veggie feast. Lovely food, efficient, professional and friendly service. Maybe they could open a SG branch.

Rasa Express, their West End branch just off Goodge Street is pretty good, too. Olives is better though if you're in that area.
